Yes, they expire after a few days and they are lost. Your friends should look into the spam, especially when using Hotmail, Outlook, Live or Gmail. Gmail users best look for spam on Gmail's WEBMAIL interface under "Others…" in the left navigation bar. If your friend missed the invitation, write the helpdesk.
