@lololulu19 said in Summer time asphalt temps: @raphjd While the IDEA of that sign is very helpful, it is not that accurate. For instance.. it is not air temperature that is the issue, but whether or not the SUN is beating down on the asphalt (or concrete). For instance.. let's say it is 90 degrees F out.. That is certainly hot, but not deadly. If you stand on asphalt that is in the SHADE of a tree or otherwise not being blasted by the sun, it is not that hot.. but if it is being exposed to the sun, it will fry your bacon! Air temperature is not the critical factor. Also, if you stand on the grass - even if the grass is exposed to direct sunlight, it doesn't get that hot. And.. if something is wet.. you know it is not over 212 F.. because if it was, that water would evaporate. The temperature would not rise above 212 F until all the water was gone. Likewise, if you see fresh water in a lake.. you know that the water is at least 32 F. It cannot be colder than 32 F until the water is frozen to ice. This is the problem when people know a little science... It is certainly true that air temperature alone does not determine the temp of asphalt: BUT if you want to get technical, it also depends heavily on the kind and color of the surface, it also depends heavily on the angle of incidence of the sun: the sun hitting the asphalt at noon is very different from the same sun, at the same temperature, at 6pm. Similarly, tropical climes (where the sun is higher in the sky) will see hotter temps than those at more northern (or, in the Southern Hemisphere, southern) latitudes... and for the same reason: angle of incidence. BUT: if you don't get lost in the numbers, the CONCEPT is valid and the WARNING is poignant! But, your other science facts are also off base: water CAN be at temps above 100-C (212-F)... WELL ABOVE! Super-heated water is common, so long as it is stagnant (as it might well be - say, in a puddle on asphalt!) Read more here water can also be cooled to well under 0-C (32-F), and again, in stagnant water this is quite common. Ask anyone who lives in a far-Northern climate: a still pond can be well under the freezing point ... throw a rock into such a pond and it will turn solid in a matter of seconds! (It's REALLY cool to watch!)

@raphjd: On another forum I belong to I read a thread about a person's cat dieing from Lily pollen, though any part of the Lily plant can kill a cat. Here's a site that lists some of the plants that can kill dogs; http://www.angel-litemaltese.com/Poison.htm Also note that chocolate and onions can kill a dog.  In the UK they estimate that 150 dogs die every year around christmas because of chocolate. Here is a list from Britishcats.co.uk; thank you Plants (and Trees) that are Poisonous to Cats Amaryllis * Cherry Tree Common or Cherry Laurel (Prunus Laurocherasus) * Daffodil * Delphinium Dumb canes (Dieffenbachia) * Elderberry Elephant's ears (Caladium) * False Jerusalem Cherry (Solanum Capicastrum) * Foxglove Iris Lily Lily of the Valley Mistletoe * Oak Tree Oleander Peach Tree Philodendron Poinsettia (Euphorbia Pulcherrima) * Rhododendrons and Azaleas Rhubarb * Spinach * True Ivies (Hedra) * Indicates those commonly found in the house: NOTE: This is not a complete list.

@lololulu19 Can't you just allow the original poster (and well-known dog lover) a moment to share a medicine / health tip for the many members with dogs, and keep politics out of Pets, for god's sake?

I have a bit of a mutt.... He's a bit of everything, but according to his DNA, he is primarily Syberian Husky believe it or not... [image: Dexter.jpg] If you're not careful, he might just curl up at your feet in your bed, or maybe even just lick you. He's supposed to be my parents' dog, but in reality, he thinks he's my dog. He hasn't really left my side since the night I moved back home. It was like he knew I moved back home the day after I had to put down my Pitt Bull, and he instantly made no bones about wanting to be my friend and made it clear that crying is not allowed.

There's always chemical cremation - although 30 States outlaw its use on human remains. When I die, I want my kids to just weigh down the carcass and drop me in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico! That way, every trip to the beach is a visit to my grave! LOL Oh, and the fish will get a smorgasbord that will last for days, if not weeks!

Blush - so this is not you pet me and I smile. Although neither are among us, these two were our most recent babies. BC looking up is the bc part of my member username (over 16 years ago), he was a Westie. Chris was a Miniature American Eskimo (they renamed the breed from German Spitz). While the original post is from 2017, perhaps we will reach other cat owners with allergies, so… Last week I was shopping for pet supplies online (chewy), and came across a new dry food called Purina ProPlan LiveClear, which "significantly reduces allergens in cat hair and dander." I bought a 7-lb bag and they love the taste.  It's not cheap, but if it works, possibly worth it.  If interested, go to the Purina website for details on how long it takes to work, etc. Save the kitties!

My dog has his own bed, but he loves sleeping next to me on my bed, he is an inside dog. My passed away outside dog was used to sleep outisde or on the sofa.

Net-iquette dictates that when you make these types of posts, you give your answer. The only exception is for researchers who don't want to influence the results.

@raphjd: Brushing him daily and get a vacuum cleaner made for dog hair. raph is truly on point – there is no substitution for regular (daily) brushing of dogs or cats -- most enjoy it, and it is good for their circulation, even (speaking as a Floridian) keeps fur out of your home's AC and costly related cleanings.

Small shitzu get once a week. Lab and rotwaller get once a month but more when their outside. Tried giving a cat a bath once. That didn't go well for either of us.

I heavily doubt that gender will affect your cat's personality, but to answer your question, I'm partial to a good tabby who isn't temperamental.
