I just uploaded a new torrent and, a little unusually for me, felt I needed exactly that ability, but the form I was using still said "No HTML, No BB code". I was using the old manual upload route. Maybe one day when I feel brave enough, I'll check out the new option.

I do agree that giving too much flexibility is going to end up with some questionable design choices on some torrents, but a little extra formatting ability wouldn't go amiss. Perhaps simply to make something bold or to underline it? [Oops, missed!]

@Aznstan Ah OK. The word is in an image rather than being true "text", which explains why I couldn't find it using the search function. Thanks for clearing that up for me. The advice there is pretty much what a moderator told me for future torrents, and does make sense in that limited situation. Not at all the "nuke all dead torrents" suggestion that my mind immediately - and obviously incorrectly - jumped to!

Interesting conundrum! There is no way of 'bumping' an existing torrent, at least one I know of. The closest would be to freeleech it, but the cost in seed bonus points of doing that would very likely be more than any upload credit you gain. You could send it to the "Please freeleech this" address for nearly dead torrents, but a mod would see it's your own torrent and may not look at it as impartially as they usually do. Neither solution gets it onto the "new" list, but it would be at the top of the "Freeleech" one for a while and, being free, likely to get more takers.

Asking for it to be deleted so you can upload a seeded replacement is reasonable.... except I wonder if it might be considered a little questionable if you're both the original uploader, and the person who's going to upload the new one. The only scenario that springs to mind where that wouldn't be questioned would be if you said something like "I can no longer seed the original torrent as I've converted the file there from.avi to .mkv", or something along those lines.

If it was me, I'd just upload the new torrent. Yes, it may get deemed a duplicate if someone thinks "Oooh. I've got that from an old upload. I'll reseed it and report this new one as a duplicate". Someone else could do that, of course, but I'd wager the person most likely to by a long way is the original uploader... and as that's you, there's a fairly good chance that's not going to happen.

Having said all that, if you do decide it should be nuked, I'd go with my original suggestion of sending a message to the Helpdesk, rather than any one individual.

@Aznstan Could you point me towards the number this is under in the guide? I couldn't find it when searching the page for the word "dead".

Also, taking down dead torrents has never been a major "thing" before. The presence of dead torrents can be very useful even when they're not seeded. I've used them countless times to find cover images, information on missing scenes from something I'm collecting, etc., so I'd personally consider their being taken down - at least as a blanket policy - to be a disservice rather than being helpful.

I've had one torrent I've uploaded subsequently removed as a duplicate, where the torrent it was deemed to be a duplicate of had been dead for at least a week before I uploaded mine. I assume that someone who saw mine decided to start seeding again and report mine as a duplicate.

I was advised by a moderator - in cases where I was replacing an existing unseeded torrent - to let them know beforehand, so it could either be marked as dead or, I guess, removed in that particular instance.

Should you feel it's necessary to flag one for taking down, though, I'd suggest contacting the Helpdesk rather than any one individual monitor. I suspect it's a shared InBox, that can be accessed and actioned by whoever happens to be covering things when it comes in.

@Seakyusee1 Most important, have you downloaded the torrent that the site created when you uploaded it, or are you trying to seed using the torrent you created? If the latter, it won't work.

What client (app) are you using? qBittorrent? uTorrent? Something else? This may help in diagnosing the problem, if it's not the one above. (Hint: It usually IS the one above.)

Can you post the link to the torrent you've created?

You can edit the quote down, so it's just a few words, if necessary, but that avoids any doubt.

@frostycab I'm guessing that these are niche torrents. That's typical of a lot of the BL torrents I grab. There are few takers overall, but those that want them tend to grab them quickly.

There's not much traffic expected after that, and often uploaders include a lot of "unnecessary" image files, and multiple .srt files instead of soft coding them into the main file. I suspect many downloaders don't want to keep all of these, so have difficulty seeding, especially long term.

If you suffer a lot with not being able to download a torrent that shows as having one or two seeders or, likewise, you're seeding yet someone has been sitting there trying to leech for ages yet has been unable to, here's a suggestion:

Someone in the swarm has to be contactable. A big part of this is someone having port forwarding functioning. That's why you can see three or four people waiting to download a new torrent but nothing is happening. Then a fifth person joins who has this, and things instantly start moving. The larger the swarm, the more likely one or more of the peers has this.

I've just switched to a VPN provider who has this feature (Proton). Now I have it configured correctly, I've seen a dramatic increase in the number of torrents I'm seeding. Most of the time there are 15+ now, whereas previously it would only be a handful. And I'm seeding torrents where there's only one leecher and I'm the only seeder, or maybe there's one other, that have not connected before. So if your VPN provider allows this, it's worth spending a few minutes setting it up, or consider switching provider when the opportunity next arises.

Now, if only I could work out why I'm not reaching the up/down speeds my ISP promises, and that I used to see!

@frostycab I understand what you're saying, but people can only "hit and run" to a limited extent without penalty. Either they become unable to download after a short period of time, or they opt to contribute financially instead of by seeding. The former means they're only a short term problem, while the latter helps keep the site free to use for the majority of members.

To be honest, I don't really see what the problem is. Things seem to be working well enough as they are. Or am I missing something major?

@willow1 I've certainly noticed a fall in both download and upload speeds, which are a factor in traffic volume, though I can't figure out how the site changes might affect that.

A while ago, I often saw speeds up to those advised by my ISP - 8mps down, 2mps up. Not all the time, obviously, but when downloading an already well seeded torrent, uploading a new one of my own or in both cases when there were multiple torrents active at the same time.

Since the change I never see these speeds - up or down - in circumstances that are the same as before. Not rarely, never!

I've just changed my VPN provider and have been able to enable port forwarding. As I hoped/expected, this has enabled me to seed many torrents that I previously couldn't. I currently have seventeen active uploads, yet the maximum speed I reach is 1.6mbs. In 'normal' circumstances, I'd expect it to be very near 2.0mbs, sometimes even going a tad over for a brief spurt.

As I say, I don't know WHY there might be some sort of correlation, and logic suggests there shouldn't be. It is interesting though that you're not the first person to mention this, excluding myself, which does make one wonder whether this is just coincidental for multiple members, or whether there really is some kind of correlation we're missing.

@ianfontinell I agree for the most part. The simple instruction to include, clearly why "this" .mkv is different to "that" .mp4 + .gb.srt + .sp.srt + fr.srt is reasonable, especially given a mod needs to be able to make that determination fairly quickly, and other things - size, resolution, etc. - might otherwise make it look so.

My "issue" is that I suspect many, as I did, will start from the basis that a .mkv containing softcoded English and Chinese dubs, all in one file, is a different format - and therefore not a duplicate - of a torrent containing a .mp4 + those two .srt subs.

I do, though, feel there should be a clear note in the definition of "duplicate" that an .mkv IS considered a duplicate of a .mp4, UNLESS it contains additional elements not included in the original torrent, and that these differences should be clearly stated.

@MrMazda Fair points, which I'll ensure I take onboard next time I upload something that could, at a simple first glance, be so considered.

I've only had three struck down out of more than two hundred, though most of these were obviously not duplicates of course. Only one of these (I think) was genuinely a duplicate - based on .mkv = .mp4. The others weren't, and I was told "well they are", even after I pointed out WHY they weren't after they'd been deleted. But I'm sure moderators et al have enough to do without getting bogged down in discussions like that, so I'll just take your advice in future and make it very clear why my torrent is not a duplicate of another, even if it might appear to be at first glance.

I do think, though, that clear guidance on the .mkv issue should be included in the upload rule. Either it is a duplicate or it isn't. If it is, is it only .mp4 that it might be a duplicate of? Is it a duplicate if it's a single file containing multiple softcoded subs, and the other is .mp4 with no softcoded subs but half-a-dozen .srt files - matching what's softcoded in the .mkv - included in the torrent?

@john32123666 I suspect that while a commenter is displayed as "Anonymous" to us mere mortals, moderators and other site officials can see exactly who left it.

You simply report the comment. Moderators will work out who left it and, if they're a repeat offender, what level of penalty is appropriate.

Why seventy-two hours? I'm sure there are members who only visit at weekends, for whatever reasons. What good does that time limit add if someone downloads a torrent on a Tuesday?

Why 1:1? What if a torrent is an old one, or has limited niche appeal? The last downloader is never going to reach that ratio, which surely discourages people from downloading once they realise that. I'm sure there are many who - for whatever reason - put a cap on the number of torrents they seed at any one time.Why expect them to seed some obscure torrent they downloaded months ago instead of one that is popular, crying out for seeds, and will help them improve their ratio?

Much better to be able to pool the total amount you're seeding rather than worry about each torrent individually. People could be motivated to keep a 1:1 ratio overall. For those who can't, there could be other ways to contribute, perhaps for example by making donations towards the cost of running the site, which obviously does need to be funded somehow. Hmmm. This all sounds familiar, for some reason.

Reseeding a dead torrent -when requested - is relatively easy. Or would be except for one thing, for me at least. That's the amount of peripheral files other than the main ones that people include - primarily images - and sometimes how they've structured subdirectories within a torrent. Many, I'm sure, are happy to download a torrent and keep it "as is" somewhere on their system. But I doubt I'm alone in maintaining my own structure, and wanting stuff I've downloaded to fit that, not a never ending variety of other structures.

"Rules" are perhaps overdoing it, merely to satisfy neat freaks like me, but perhaps some "best practice" guidance would be helpful? Making it easier to reseed when required is surely a much better way of keeping torrents alive than imposing arbitrary seeding rules which both create their own problems, and don't solve the existing ones.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that then. A rule is only pointless if it is both ignored AND not enforced. I know both from personal experience, and from seeing torrents I've grabbed and was seeding suddenly disappear, that it most definitely IS enforced. That simply takes someone spotting it, and taking thirty seconds to report it.

I've had conversations with moderators following the 'duplicate' takedowns. One was considered a duplicate even though the .mkv file had a softcoded subtitle track not included in the .mp4 + .srt version. With another, I was specifically told that .mkv and .mp4 are not considered different formats.

@john32123666 Why is it useless? When something is spotted, you simply report it using the link specifically for that purpose. And, assuming it actually is a duplicate, the person reporting it gets a 50pt seed bonus. They're harder to spot, of course, when someone decides to use a different title and/or file name, and I do sometimes wonder if this is deliberate.

I would say, though, for such an 'important' rule, it's not particularly well defined. I've read it multiple times both before and after uploading a torrent deemed a duplicate and other than the .mp4 : .mkv issue - which is not mentioned - I still contend they weren't duplicates. Except one where the original was a dead torrent, rechecked over more than a week before uploading, where the original uploader (or someone) subsequently seeded it, so mine was judged to be the duplicate.
