@flozen said in Aaron Carter, 34, RIP: It's a sad -- but not completely shocking -- turn of events So true. Porn news is too often a necrology of beautiful men. I am reminded of a line from Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song Trilogy: I think my biggest problem is being young and beautiful. It's my biggest problem because I've never been young and beautiful. Oh, I've been beautiful, and God knows I've been young, but never the twain have met. No, Arnold, by not being young and beautiful at the same time, you were probably saved much grief. @kalayaan said May you have the Peace you really needed. Amen to that. It is a tragedy that so many only find peace in the grave.

@kalayaan Yes, the Unruh Civil Rights Act prohibits any business in California from engaging in unlawful discrimination against all persons (consumers) within California's jurisdiction, where the unlawful discrimination is in part based on a person's sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, age, disability, medical condition, genetic information, marital status, sexual orientation, citizenship, primary language, or immigration status. Apparently the judge decided that the baker's right to religious freedom and "artistic" expression overthrows the non-discrimination act. By digging a little to the case, I find it important that the baker was represented pro bono by lawyers of a conservative coalition. Also, her case was capitalized by conservative media as a victory of the "moral" people over the sinful.

@raphjd I hadn't seen this news. Thanks for sharing. It's been troubling to me to see Poland, a country with its own big fascism problem, lauded as a hero for supporting Ukraine. My hope is that their responsibilities to the EU will at least force them to make equitable policy, even if they keep electing right wing fucks.

@hubrys Ah, because you framed the original post as being in high school libraries, we can't talk about the full context of the argument. And liberals pretend they aren't control freaks.

@lololulu19 said in More Oscars fallout from that slap: @buonaroti ...even supposedly civilized black people can't control their emotions. How many times have black people's icons let them down? Will Smith, OJ Simpson, Tiger Woods, Barack Obama, Michael Jackson, Prince. The most infantile minds could draw a similar, meaningless list for any ethnic group -- oh, and for gay men, as well. Enough with your sad and unpleasant racial messaging.

@lololulu19 said in Risk of AIDS in sex with women vs men: I was having a discussion with someone about the rationale for engaging in gay sex. I pointed out that with gay sex, you are not risking having an unplanned, unwanted baby, or trip to an abortion clinic. The person I was chatting with responded with "Well, with gay sex you are risking AIDS". At first, I thought to myself that he had a point.. but then.. I realized.. his point was nonsense. You get AIDS by having sex with women too. In fact, it seems the way many if not most people got AIDS was not from sex, but by sharing dirty needles. My question is.. Is sex with women any less of a risk of AIDS than sex with men? And.. let's not forget that women are like incubators for a plethora of STDs. Not sure what that comment above (about teachers) was about, but it's incorrect to believe that the incidence of HIV infection when having sex with an untreated HIV+ partner is that much greater in men than with women. The "abundance" of HIV in the gay community in "white" countries (large parts of Europe, North America, & Australia) does not extend itself to other parts of the world: AIDS is mostly heterosexual in Africa, as well as most of Asia and Latin America. This is in large part because the "gay" communities in those cultures are less "out" and so are considerably less "promiscuous"... That said, transmission from an infected woman to an uninfected man, or from an infected bottom man to an uninfected top is considerably less likely (tho far from "hard")... The idea that "straight" people get HIV primarily from IV drug use is a homophobic trope designed to further demonize those infected with HIV... and it is factually incorrect.

@bi4smooth But that's not what the lawsuit was about. The court didn't rule on society changing the definition, but the Scottish government changing the definition.

You misunderstood my grounds for appeal. I have no illusions that the Fed judiciary (still plump with Trump nominees) will fail to continue the activist intervention that led to the creation of Gay Rights under Federal Court mandate long before any actual laws were passed (much as I agreed with the politics of those rulings, they were "judicial overreach" IMHO). No, the basis of the appeals in this case will be the vagueness of the law. There is a principle under US Law that says, for example, you can't write a law that says "Don't do bad thing, or you'll go to jail." and "let the courts figure it out" - which is basically what the real "guts" of this new law attempts to do... No, laws have to be specific!
