The Democrats are not great but they are certainly less amoral than the Republicans.  The Democrats are a conservative party while the Republicans have shifted so far to the right that they are regressive, authoritarian, nationalist, xenophobic, corporatist, anti-democracy, etc.  The Republicans are not amoral, they are immoral. The big lie the extreme right tells the American people is that the Democrats are lefties.  In Europe they would be center or even right of center, not even progressive in the least.  They are very conservative and generally maintain the status quo.  That includes everyone from Pelosi and Schumer to Obama, Biden, and the Clintons.  Even Bernie Sanders, a Social Democrat, would not be considered left-of-center in Europe. Universal healthcare and universal civil rights are not extreme left concepts.  They would not even be considered mildly progressive in any western nation other than in the U.S.  Obamacare, for instance, is just insurance that you pay out-of-pocket for with a government subsidy.  In most similar nations, everyone has healthcare coverage without having to come up with a monthly payment equivalent to hundreds of dollars.   Yet the Republicans act like it is equivalent to absolute communism.  That's how brainwashed Americans are. Sorry to continue the shift away from the original topic of trans rights in the UK, but the record needs to be set straight.  The Democrats in the U.S. are not progressive, they are conservative, and they cannot be counted on to safeguard trans rights, but they are without a doubt better for civil rights than the Republicans, who want to control women's wombs, separate children from families and lock them in cages, deport Dreamers who have lived most of their lives in the U.S., discriminate against trans and gay people in the guise of religious freedom, and do away with social systems that help everyone including public schools, public hospitals, even public mail delivery, etc.

@andergarcia: This is not the case, unfortunately, in my country: hate crimes occur more often than before, and very few (to say almost none) of them are fake  :cry2: Fake hate crimes are very rare in the U.S. compared to real crimes but when they occur, they get a lot of publicity.  People who get their news from unreliable sources like Fox News or Facebook have a very distorted view of the world that reinforces their ignorant viewpoints.  Those people often focus on something that rarely occurs while ignoring what often occurs. Sometimes they will even invent hoax hate crimes that never existed, for instance, claiming that Bubba Wallace falsely reported a hate crime when that is completely contrary to facts, because it fits their hateful, racist perspective.  Even when presented with evidence, they will cling to their ignorant false beliefs, and that's how you know they are actually stupid and incapable of learning as opposed to just being ignorant.   Sticking to false beliefs over facts is dangerous:  think about regressive, autocratic politicians like Bolsonaro and Trump and how their denial of science for political convenience is costing hundreds of thousands of people their lives. Any kind of false report of a crime should be taken seriously, but unfortunately the vast majority of hoax racial hate crimes in the U.S. are white people falsely blaming black people for crimes.  White people will invent a black criminal as a convenient way of deflecting blame from themselves or other white people. There's a long history of that in the context of institutional U.S. racism, white people accusing black people of violent crimes they did not commit, and particularly white women falsely accusing black men of rape.  That goes back centuries.  U.S. history is full of cases of such false accusations, often resulting in the gory death of an innocent black man by a lynch mob.

More visibility is needed.

Of course, but why is it so "difficult" (or they are so afraid of) for them to come out? There are other jobs where coming out seems to be easier than in sports, and especially in football. @raphjd: Of course, there are gay players in every sport.

I completely agree with all the comment that point out that it does not necessarily have to do with religion or political views, especially broad terms like left and right. At the end of the day there is no detailed fixed definition for any of those terms that people use to identify themselves as. Additionally I want to add that even member of the LGBTQ community have very different perspectives when they say they want to support it. For instance some gay, bi etc people are very much against pride parades for instance (at least in my country), for various reasons, most of which "scream" that they simply seek acceptance through supporting a more um "serious" demeanor, as if to be accepted you have to be solemn and not stand out in any way that other people might find "flamboyant" or not serious enough. I remember my first time witnessing a pride by complete accident, I felt so relieved. I was about 21-22 deep in the closet, seriously believing that gay people can simply just sit home and watch porn and nothing else (yes I was dumb). Being flamboyant or being a drag queen dancing at the front row of the parade does not mean in any way that you are doing a disservice to the "movement". In fact, I would wager that promoting a more heteronormative image as the more serious one is pretty much internalised homophobia, because it leads to judging people who are just like you simply based on how they express themselves.
