It looks like gay-torrents.net is more than just "down".

Saw this report from them on another site:

Yesterday, the gay-torrents.net domain DNS servers were renamed/redirected without authorisation. The site databases have not been compromised. We have notified, and are currently waiting for the appropriate authorities to restore the correct DNS servers.

@tnar I wonder how that is possible. Perhaps an inside job? Or hacked?

Anyone have any updates? Last thing I saw last night was a page saying they think it should be safe to log in again, but that they were still bringing some parts of the site back online. I opted to stay out until they'd had a chance to make sure everything was good.

Got up today, and it keeps trying to redirect me to another dodgy domain that throws big nasty warnings at me, so obviously haven't been able to get any more info.

                  site is back online

                  from their forum:
                  Update 4 October 2024
The DNS servers are now under our control again, the tracker is online and functioning normally. The torrent site is safely and tentatively back on-line for all again. It may take some time for everyone to be able to access the site and for members to get back in and start leeching, seeding. Some new torrents from Tuesday have not yet been able to be seeded, these will start when the uploaders can return to the torrent site, etc. Everything should be normal within a few hours.

@x819x Odd. This is what I've been getting today when I try to go to the site:

                    Screenshot 2024-10-04 182226.png

However, just now it briefly tried to take me to some gambling site, and trying again has left me with a completely blank page. I've tried clearing my cookies and whatnot, but to no avail.

might be that still not all DNS servers around the globe are updated. So you may have to wait a little longer...

@x819x Oh well, I'll try tomorrow and see. It's not like I'll be missing much while they get things back up to speed.

still not updated for me, either. DNS changes can take a while to propagate, then your local DNS cache needs to time out or be purged also. (on your computer as well as your router).

MOST DNS servers have updated, but there are still some stragglers. I wouldn't worry too much for a couple of days for some to resolve the correct IP addresses. We have 3 different IP addresses for the torrent site (Torrent database, Images, and Tracker), so it may take a few days for all of them to propagate fully into the thousands (over 62,000 public servers) of DNS servers.

@tnar Have you tried using a VPN? They re-route through other servers.

That site is now working for me for a couple of days.

Site came back a couple of hours ago for me, so looks like everything is sorting itself out slowly.

                                  Bump.

Anyone else having trouble connecting to both web site and tracker (i.e. gay-area.org)?

@rentboy Yup, me too. For the last several hours I've been unable to access the site (timeout error) and I've just noticed that six out of six torrents I was seeding have errored with the message "Host not found (authoritative)".

It has been unreachable around 8 hours for me (could be more).

There was a DNS update today...

All we can do at this point is leave our clients running and wait.

@rentboy Its probably worth noting that this thread is over a year and a half old and referencing gay-torrents.net. Gay-area.org is an entirely different site.

And yes, gay-area.org is down for everyone. It happens. It'll be back in a few hours probably. 🙂

Or maybe not... At least, probably not soon, if at all. Never say never, but, it sure is suspicious.

There is an article on TorrentFreak referencing a lawsuit with Gay-Torrents.Org (aka Gay-Area.Org).

As @frostycab said, this has nothing to do with Gay-Torrents.Net.

This has a lot to do with why I use a VPN for torrent traffic.

Also, FWIW, I did a little digging and it seems that their site IP address has been changed to 192.0.2.1, which is particularly interesting as this is a particular subnet that is not routable to the internet and is not intended to be used for live internet traffic. This suggests something more nefarious has happened.
