There's really no arguing that it's ugly. And kind of alien-looking. And yeah, even downright gross. But dang it! Scobys make some delicious kombucha! If you want to save a few bucks on your 'booch habit, there's just no getting around it. You're going to need a scoby. You can beg a scoby from a kombucha-brewing friend, or you can order a fresh one online. But there's one more option: you can grow your own. What is a Scoby? "Scoby" is actually an acronym: Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. And that's exactly what it is! A scoby is the living home for the bacteria and yeast that transform sweet tea into tangy, fizzy kombucha — think of the scoby as the coral reef of the bacteria and yeast world. It a rubbery raft that floats on the surface of the kombucha. Aside from being a home for yeast and good bacteria, the scoby seals off the fermenting kombucha from the air and protects it from outside, undesirable bacterias while it's fermenting. P.S. You'll also sometimes hear scobys referred to as "kombucha mothers" or "kombcha mushrooms." If you read or hear references to these things, know that it's all the same thing. Yes, this topic is older than I am, but so long as they keep showing up in the Forums, even these venerable postings may deserve a response. In this case, the link goes to a general Yahoo site that has nothing evident about a Southern (US) recipe. An online search (I use Bing in order to avoid yet another Microsloth product) reveals the recipe in question is for "pimento cheese." What worked as of a minute or so ago is this: http://carolinafishmarket.com/the-southern-staple-everyone-should-know-how-to-make-pimento-cheese/

This sounds really YUMMY!! However, I am not a fan of any Fish at all.  :cry2: just can't do it.  :sorry: I do think looking at this recipe that I could substitute Boneless Chicken Breast for the Salmon and it will be just as delicious!!

Now my grandma always stored canned goods in the garage, so I wonder how dangerous that one is?

Hmmm…Why is this called "for Needy people"?  Is it supposed to be economical? I make a delicious vegetable noodle soup that is very economical and easy.  It basically consists of your choice of noodles, cut potatoes, canned vegetables (corn, green beans, carrots, tomatoes), tomato sauce, and spices (seasoned salt, pepper, garlic, cumin, chili powder, etc.).  If I want I also add ground beef to add meat.  It is great for cold weather, very hearty, and you can pretty much add or subtract what you want to your own preference.

For the record, most industrial freezers are way cooler than the home freezers. This quickly freezes the cream in place so it prevents enough time for the water crystals to separate from the fat in the cream. It is the collection of these water that freeze that make your ice cream super hard. Silly as it may be, but I use to put my ice cream machine completely in the freezer as it is turning the cream so that it can freeze more quickly after it's done. If you've ever had DippinDots in the mall, the pebble like "ice cream", they taste very rich in cream and melt like chocalate truffles. Part of the reason why they are expensive is because they're freezing process involves blasting dripping cream with liquid nitrogen which instantly freezes the cream and prevent nearly no water separation. A quick way to see if your freezer is fast (or optimal temperature) is to freeze a banana. If it turns black, then it's not fast enough. Freezing bananas in industrial freezers actually don't make it turn black and freshness of fruits are preserved after thawing.
