Presently there are 17,434 dead torrents on the system going back to torrents posted on 2008-05-04 so it doesn't come as a surprise to me that people end up posting duplicates. I don't know about the rest of you but when I'm searching for torrents to download I don't do a search to include "dead" torrents. Therefore it would be easy to see members uploading duplicates. Personally I was shocked to see so many dead torrents still on the site… just how long are these "dead" torrents kept?

As for the search I did, it was for a specific file by name and the list came up with 126 matches with only 1 being the correct file. In none of the other files listed in the search (description or file name) did I find anything relating to the search although the word "Men" was in the title so if this would be taken into account as per your explanation cannonmc, I would expect a lot more than 126 matches :funny2:.

When I search for dead torrents, I get about 66 000, mean a third of all registered torrents.

This number is changing all time, because some torrents are seeded at parts of the day only. This means their files are still downloadable.
Many torrents can be revived by sending out reseed requests and leave a comment to reseed (which generates a PM to the uploader). This means their files are still downloadable.

So before deleting a dead torrent, it needs to be checked if it can't be reseed, this in an archive building approach we got, rather than the novelty approach of 0day trackers.

A side from deleting never seen seeding new uploads after 3 days, deleting dead torrents is done manually for above mentioned reason.

As mentioned earlier in this topic, we prefer an alive duplicate over a dead original if it gets reported. That is one of the occasions to delete a dead torrent.

I have another question regarding duplicates as this has happened to me a couple of times, including yesterday. When a new video at a major site is released, such as Sean Cody, I will download the video and make sure it has not yet been uploaded. Then I make screencaps, copy the description, create the torrent and then upload the torrent to the site. By the time my client goes through its hashcheck and begins to seed, I will reload the search page to see if my torrent is indeed visible ( I know I can also check that in my profile) and lo and behold, another user has beaten by a few minutes with the same upload.
My question is: do I need to search for the video torrent with the "including dead" option to see if someone created the torrent and is not yet seeding it?

I have to admit that when this has happened to me, I will report my own torrent as a dupe just to get the SB, which I think I deserve for the effort.

First off, kudos for your thorough efforts in trying to avoid uploading duplicates.

Direct to your question, YES, I think that's a terrific idea, just prior to uploading, "to search for the video torrent with the "including dead" option to see if someone created the torrent and is not yet seeding it".

As an aside, and to expand your thinking and concerns… that's somewhat of a bitch of a situation, where being conscientious and thorough in creating a terrific presentation... results in you getting "beaten" (in that race to upload a new video), by another member, HUH!?.

In that vein (of just HOW to be the "winner" of that race to be the first uploader...) What to do?? Could I make some suggestions?

First off, I noticed your uploads usually just include 10 pictures... So I think the following ideas could work for you:

You COULD just upload the bare-bones version of the torrent presentation, to start with. This gets the upload date and time established.
Then, (to avoid your upload being reported by other members for missing description and pictures, [remotely] risking loss of your Auto-Approval Rights) ASAP!!! Repeatedly EDIT your upload…
ADD a GOOD description… and...
for starters, maybe add just ONE good picture... NOW, you've followed the basic rules. THEN, you can take your time creating screen-caps, and then (AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO AVOID OTHER MEMBERS UPLOADING PICTURES BEFORE YOU)..
ADD ALL your lovely pictures... perhaps even deleting the original picture you had uploaded, earlier. NOTE that pictures added via editing your torrent will be added in reverse order to the way they are shown in the final torrent presentation; thus LAST picture added… will be the FIRST picture displayed.

What do you think of this idea?

If you needed help deleting sub-par pictures already added to your torrent prior to YOU being able to upload good pictures, [on a limited basis, please] you could PM me, and I'll review your torrent presentation pictures, and edit (delete sub-par pictures) as needed.

Whilst the video is downloading, I can prepare the upload on the upload on the Upload Page and as soon as the video completes downloading, create the torrent in my client and complete the upload process. I cant think of any way of doing it any faster.

There isn't a duplicate report in the queue with your name on it, so… either it was approved as valid, and you got your 50 points (which you said you can't recall, anyway) or your report was rejected for being invalid.

Also, do not forget that there are two other things to take into account when determining whether or not a torrent is a duplicate….. They are:

Format Container - e.g. are both files in .avi or is one .avi and one .mp4... If the format container is different, then they are not considered a duplicate

File Size - If the first rule isn't applicable because the format container is the same (i.e. both files are .avi), then you need to look at the size difference. If the file size is the same, then it is a duplicate. If the file size is different, the newer upload must be a minimum of 10% different than the original torrent in order to not be classified as a duplicate.

DUPLICATE files are not allowed and will be removed. You are expected to run a search for duplicates prior to submitting a torrent. Duplicates may be accepted when part of a themed collection. A file is considered a duplicate if an existing torrent has the same format and similar size (<10% difference) and has at least one seeder.

So in case where 1 or both of the torrent is/are dead, you cannot make a dupe report.

Lately I've noticed duplicates with a twist; a dupliacted file, plus a zip file. In the example i give below there's nothing in the description indicating what is in the zip file. Would such a case be considered a dupliacte?

In most (but not all) cases, the zip file contains photos that the studios provide alongside the video on their sites.

In your instance, you can click on the "Num files" and see that the zip is "SS_XavierRyan_BillySaint_JustinCross_2400highres.zip". The 'highres' is an indicator of high-resolution photos.

Whether one of these posts counts as a dupe, hope you get a response.

Same file size (the video) and format, yes, it is a dupe. However there is an exception to this rule, when a single torrent is also in another torrent which is a part of a themed collection then it is not consider a dupe.

However, "XPERIMENT volume one" is arranged as a single RAR file while "XPERIMENT Vol.01 - KENDO BOY" (which is younger) is the subdirectory with pictures. I reported that these are the duplicates (however, no reply yet). Is it really true that the packing/repacking of the files creates new torrent which is formally different in its format?

I'm a touch confused. I seem to recall from an earlier post that merely adding pictures along with a previosuly-uploaded video does NOT make it a new upload. In other words, adding pictures makes no difference. The +/- 10% rule applies to the video file, not the collection of files as a whole.

Or at least that's what I understood from the Forum previously. Have I been wrong all this time?

What is the official rule here? Could a GTRU staff member please clarify?

Now I'm super confused. Kalayaan, in your reply above today, you seem to indicate that if the entire collection of video, pics, etc is +/- 10% the upload is not a dupliacte, even if the video file is the same (I don't know how to use the quote function - sorry).

But in another thread titles "Bundling" yesterday you wrote:

"I've discussed this with one of our global mod and the answer is Yes, the pictures in the file is irrelevant.
We based our dupe on the file size (exact size or <10%difference) and file format."

If I'm understand both posts correctly, there's a contradiction here.

The second one (this topic post) both contains images only with rar as against jpg/png breakdown pictures. No Video included in the last question regarding Xperiment which is a magazine
