@fancydude: Further, to say the Catholic church has demonized human sexuality unmatched by any other institution - it might even be true - but the world is a big place and several millennia is long time - you must indeed be the font of all knowledge to make that claim! In a real sense, I think it's just a rare opportunity to help that actually makes things worthwhile.  So we should recognize it when someone helps us, and even better if we recognize an opportunity to really help someone else.

Actually, I think he probably did notice.  Now Gays are a tiny minority compared to other groups, but the Church does respond over time.  Women are lectors, girls are altar servers (altarboys) and not much is said.  They wouldn't dare, in USA anyhow.  The donations would drop off too much and there would be too much protest.

He actually predicted that the world would end no earlier than 2060, stating "This I mention not to assert when the time of the end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash conjectures of fanciful men who are frequently predicting the time of the end, and by doing so bring the sacred prophesies into discredit as often as their predictions fail."  I quite like his way of thinking  ;D

You'll need to read more than just that part.  Many cities were accused of committing the sins of Sodom.  The one thing you will notice is that while they are said to have committed the same sin, there is no mention of sex. Even the use of "to know" does not mean that it was necessarily about sex.  There are 914 confirmed cases where "to know" means literally that, to know something/someone.  On the other hand there are less than 20 confirmed cases of "to know" meaning sex. Even if we exclude the other cities that committed the same sin of inhospitality, there is no clear evidence that "to know" in the case of Sodom had anything to do with sex.  The region was war torn and some strangers suddenly appear, so the town's men wanted to know them.  Why are we supposed to automatically assume that means they wanted to fuck them?!  It would make more sense that the town's men wanted to meet them and find out who they are.  This makes even more sense when you consider that, in order to keep the men from attacking the strangers, Abraham offers up his daughters for sex if they will leave the men alone.  Now why would a man offer his daughters up for sex to a bunch of gays?!  That makes no sense. Of the 5 cities {Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim and Bela—also called Zoar} that were destroyed that night, only Sodom is supposed to have been destroyed for homosexuality, yet they all committed the exact same sins.  So why hasn't any of the other cities been labelled as fag cities?!

I am embarrassed to be a catholic, even if not practicing (I didn't chose to be one too)  ::) It looks like reason, logic doesn't go with religion. At least this one

@raphjd: This is in Aberdeen where I live, but I only heard about it from another forum as none of the UK media seemed to talk about it, until this weekend when vote happened. I regard it as a sign of progress that this ordainment was not news in Scotland. It should not be news anywhere. Gay bishops, gay priests, gay presidents, gay prime ministers, and gay people of all sorts should be no more remarkable for being gay than for being left-handed.
