The Democratic Party suffered significant losses in recent cycles, including to Donald Trump, largely due to public backlash over the handling of the COVID-19 crisis and the lack of charismatic leadership in key races, such as those involving Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
However, there is now a real opportunity to rebuild momentum. A dynamic movement led by young progressives, socialists, LGBTQ+ activists, and diverse minority communities is gaining strength in New York. With more charismatic figures like Zohran Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leading important races, and with growing participation from young Muslim, Somali, Black, and other minority voters, the party has a chance to shift power away from billionaire influence.
The key is to prioritize strong, relatable candidates in major races. We already have solid support from Muslim, Somali, Black, and LGBTQ+ communities, but we are losing ground with Hispanic voters, many of whom have moved toward more conservative positions on economic and immigration issues.
We must also find practical ways to accommodate the cultural and religious practices of growing Muslim-majority neighborhoods. I understand that some Democrats are concerned about potential conflicts with LGBTQ+ rights and other progressive values. These tensions are real and must be handled carefully. However, allowing cultural accommodations and internal laws in areas where communities are already a clear majority can help maintain the support of this fast-growing demographic. People who disagree with certain cultural practices can simply choose not to live in those specific areas. Maintaining this base is strategically important, as recent victories in New York have shown.
Let’s move forward. This year we have the chance for a strong progressive wave. We will not allow the US to be dominated by trillionaires and billionaires who want to replace us with AI and exterminate minorities!
