When I was younger, I fell in love with a woman (I've always been pansexual, though I haven't always self-labeled myself with that term)... when I married her and had a child with her, ALL of my gay friends dropped me like a hot potato! I got really mad at one and called him a "hypocrite worse than Jimmy Swaggart (a televangelist who was about to be outed in 1988, but went on live TV and tearfully "confessed his sins" - albeit without details, so the nature of his "sins" remained secret for some time). I told him something akin to "you insist that the world accept you as you are: gay, because God made you that way... yet you insist that I deny who God made ME to be so that I can fit into your closed-minded narrative! No thank you!" We never spoke again... I had thought of him as a good, close friend... I am sorry it ended that way, but my now-ex wife and I had 12+ GOOD years together (of 15 total years of marriage). If you care, I'm currently seeing a man - a gay man - who understands that my ATTRACTION to some women is no different than my attraction to some men. What matters is that I remain devoted to HIM, have sex with only HIM, and do not actively tempt myself to stray... those are actions, not attractions! (I can control my actions, but I cannot control my attractions!)

Personally, I think there was more to the story.  As far as I remember, John didn't know that Ryan had actually seen and filmed him.  I think there was a lot that John did not know and was likely a bit uncomfortable with, and to avoid the situation and its awkwardness, he just cut Ryan out of his life.  I am not sure how much John knew about Ryan's perspective on things.
