why is there a three message limit?

I sent in a msg to the helpdesk but what in tf is the point of only letting people have a three message limit? I could understand if it was three in a row from just you but if youre messaging with someone actively back and forth why limit it? I didnt even know that was a thing.
I love all of you that run this site and created this wonderful thing but still some of the shit is ridiculous. Im sure theres some reason but its whatever.

@cp2000 i'm not sure but i think the limit refers to how many people you can start a new chat in a day, if you already have a chat with someone it doesn't count towards that limit.
btw when i go to compose a new message it says my limit is 23.

@ianfontinell no dude like on the actual site not on the forum for some reason there's a three message limit on the site for me and he is still messaging me so it doesn't apply to him but for some reason it applies to me and I don't understand why. I've never had any fuck ups where I sent too many messages or something it's just the weirdest thing I was trying to message him back

@cp2000 Yeah, this is my experience on the main site too. It's a "hard limit" of three messages, possibly in a twenty-four hour period rather than "per day". This would make sense, given when each "day" starts differs according to time zone. I've only a little experience, but it has definitely hit the three messages maximum to a single user, even when that user has been an Admin or Moderator.
This is, I think, something that few are aware of until they try to send a fourth message. I now point this out when I reply to messages, advising "don't waste a reply to this with 'thanks for the info'!"
This was before the forum access issues were fixed. I'll likely now suggest to anyone that messages me on the main site that we continue the conversation - if necessary - here.

I'm not sure how the restriction works on the new system, but I know on the old system, you were only able to send messages to staff for the first 6 months of membership, but once you reached the 6 month mark, you could message anyone on the site whose privacy settings allowed for PMs.
The reason for this was because we had issues with spam bots somehow getting through the system and mass PM'ing spam to just about everyone on the site. The restriction became a necessary evil in order to stop this kind of spam bot abuse.
I'll have to look into the details of the restrictions on the new system, but I would be very surprised if the reason for the restriction isn't still the same.
