Personally, I think it's great!

It provides opportunities for both downloaders, as well as uploaders.

I've had the same upload removed twice now, in spite of its 15-16% difference in file size of that of the original.

But do we we really need a multitude of different file sizes and formats of the same movie, over and over again.

To my mind there are two possibilities, a full DVD post, a decent non-DVD post. I realise that some people like the tweaks of other posts but type 'scandal vatican' for instance into the search box. Do we really need 44 different posts?

And with so many duplicates it is obvious the seeder hasn't even bothered to check and certainly hasn't bother to say 'this is a copy of something I got elsewhere so thank you to the original poster'.

I've seen several possible duplicates; same titles, same size, same pics, etc. But more often than not, the file type is not listed. Short of downloading both files, how can we tell what kinds of files they are? I assume that you guys in Admin can tell; so I've reported a couple of these cases. Was this the right thing to do?

The file type should show if you hover over the file line in the Size/Infos column of the torrent list page.

If not (and I haven't seen this), click to the torrent page and click on Show Full List in the Num Files line. If that still doesn't work and you are desperate to know, you could download the torrent file, open it and your torrent client will show what you would download if you clicked OK. You don't need to download it.

I have 3 questions about reporting dupes:

1.) Can I report a dupe torrent with no seeder (new torrent)?

2.) Can I report a dead dupe torrent? I mean sometimes its only dead temporarily, and can be revived when you ask for seeders. (I am reporting this so they can be deleted by admins, not for the sake of SB but just my OCD kicking in. ;D )

and lastly:

3.) Should I report a dupe torrent when the original torrent is dead? Many times and I am guilty of this, but seeders prefer to seed the newer torrent knowing, or not, that it is a dupe torrent because it was FL'ed. What should be done in this situation?

Please don't report if the new duplicate is less than 96 hours old. Reason: we have a auto clean-up of new never seeded torrents in place.
Yes, please. We won't try to revive the dead duplicate (as long as the original isn't dead and can't be revived). If the duplicate is dead, it will be deleted and the report dismissed, means you won't get points (sorry). This way of handling is due to limitations of the handling tool. We would like to give points if it isn't case 1).

Thank you for clearing this up. Just a follow up question on #2, do you think its underhanded, if I ask for seeders on the dead dupe torrent to revive it just to report it as dupe so I can earn SB?

I had to smile at this suggestion "Kababayan", don't you think it's rather unfair to the seeders that would seed a dead dupe torrent so that you can report it and earn SB?

In a naughty moment I did wonder what would happen if I uploaded a duplicate then reported it as a duplicate.

actually, the reason why I asked is not because I want to do it, its because I saw some dead torrents on FL when there is a live torrent of the same file when you do a search. I can not think why people would put a dead dupe torrent on FL other than for this reason.

Yes the dupes are never ending!!!!! And there are plenty of bad reports.

OK, so I'm hesitant to report this as a duplicate, although really it is. Here are the torrents:

The actual videos files are the exact same; the difference is that the second one also has a small jpg file along with it. I call shenanigans: while technically the torrents are different, the difference violates the intent of the duplicate rules.

So I thought I would ask for your all opinions on this. Should I report this as duplicate?

That is a duplicate and I think you will find that it will disappear soon. The original has already gone to the top of the listings.

Thanks. I've reported it. I notice that people are getting cleverer and cleverer about disguising duplicates; changing file names, etc. Sigh. Eternal vigilance!

I don't really think they are trying to be clever. I think a lot of the time they don't bother to check. Which is a bit silly as they go to the trouble of getting a post ready only to have it deleted.

Yeah, you're probably right. Although some people might try to get the extra UL ratio boost; one reads about low ratios all the time in the forum. But especially for the duplicates with a year or more between them; you're probably right.

One should keep in mind that some of these duplicates have been uploaded by new members who may have searched but didn't realize they needed to search for "dead" torrents as well as active torrents. I know that when I started to upload torrents I never even thought about searching for "dead" torrents which resulted in some of my torrents being duplicates. Once I realized that I needed to search for both active and "dead" torrents, I was able to ensure that I didn't upload duplicates again. (although, I must admit I have missed a few). Personally I think that if a torrent is "dead" then its "dead", period! If I understand correctly, these "dead" torrents don't show up when one does a search in your default categories therefore they are just sitting there. No one can see them, no one can download them and no one is seeding them… therefore they are "dead".

I do have a couple of questions that I would appreciate if someone can answer them for, it would be greatly appreciated!!

1. How long do these "dead" torrents remain on the site?
2. Why when a file reported as a duplicate and therefore deleted, do the mods ask you to keep seeding them?
3. When I do search for a torrent (active & dead), why do I get a list of torrents with totally different names not even related to my search?

A 'dead' torrent is still on the tracker. All it needs to revive them is for someone to start seeding again. If they disappear from the tracker then they would need to be reposted from scratch, new torrent, new picture(s), new information.

I can only give a definite answer to your #2.

When a duplicate is deleted, it is first just hidden from public view so no-one else can download the torrent. The torrent is left open until everyone who downloaded the duplicate torrent has finished downloading the file.

It is difficult to know about your unrelated searches but if could be that the search term you used is in the description rather than as a torrent name.

Presently there are 17,434 dead torrents on the system going back to torrents posted on 2008-05-04 so it doesn't come as a surprise to me that people end up posting duplicates. I don't know about the rest of you but when I'm searching for torrents to download I don't do a search to include "dead" torrents. Therefore it would be easy to see members uploading duplicates. Personally I was shocked to see so many dead torrents still on the site… just how long are these "dead" torrents kept?

As for the search I did, it was for a specific file by name and the list came up with 126 matches with only 1 being the correct file. In none of the other files listed in the search (description or file name) did I find anything relating to the search although the word "Men" was in the title so if this would be taken into account as per your explanation cannonmc, I would expect a lot more than 126 matches :funny2:.

When I search for dead torrents, I get about 66 000, mean a third of all registered torrents.

This number is changing all time, because some torrents are seeded at parts of the day only. This means their files are still downloadable.
Many torrents can be revived by sending out reseed requests and leave a comment to reseed (which generates a PM to the uploader). This means their files are still downloadable.

So before deleting a dead torrent, it needs to be checked if it can't be reseed, this in an archive building approach we got, rather than the novelty approach of 0day trackers.

A side from deleting never seen seeding new uploads after 3 days, deleting dead torrents is done manually for above mentioned reason.

As mentioned earlier in this topic, we prefer an alive duplicate over a dead original if it gets reported. That is one of the occasions to delete a dead torrent.
