I get that they're meant to provide support, I just don't get why that means your ass has to be exposed.
Briefs have elastic too so perform much the same function, but the elastic on a jockstrap is thicker and isn't compromised by any material stretching over your ass, especially if you have a fat ass ;). You should try wearing one and see the difference - they hold everything in place perfectly. Shock doctor do skins-type compression shorts with the elastic sewn in (x-fit), but it doesn't work nearly as well.

Jockstraps help with BDP (Big Dick Problems).
