Taking clips from movies??

I see plenty of clips and sections posted here from longer movies. I would like to be able to edit/clip certain parts from movies too.
What software does anyone recommend to simply save a portion of a video as a new file? freeware is preferred. I don't need to do any fancy editing, tagging, or merging; I just want to save the good scenes in a movie and get rid of the lame ones.
Any help is appreciated. :hug:

I personally use NCH VideoPad Video Editor, which is available on the tracker here.
