Do email notifications work?

In Profile Settings > Content Preferences, is "Notify me when I have received a PM" for email notifications? I have it enabled but I never get email notifications when I have messages on the site or replies in the forum.

@thedude99 It seems to be sporadic, or at least there are some sort of intricate rules at play.
I've certainly received email alerts that I have a PM. But I'm sure I've also had PMs that I've only become aware of when visiting the site.
It may perhaps be that PMs from other members trigger a message, whilst those from "system" - and maybe moderators? - don't. I'm pretty sure I've never received an email about a reseed request, for example. But then, I don't get a lot of non-system PMs, so probably not enough to mentally spot some kind of pattern.

I've only had one or 2 email notifications from the site that I can remember, and they were regarding a message from another member. I don't get them for reseed requests or freeleech notifications, so that might be the intended behaviour. I hope it is, because I don't want my email spammed with a dozen reseed emails every day.

Yeah it seems to be an issue. I get an email maybe 20% of the time.

yes, that switch is for email and it works, but only under two conditions, which is why it looks random:
The mail only goes out if you have not been active on the site in the last 5 minutes. If you are browsing when the PM arrives, you see it on the site and no mail is sent.
If mail to your address has bounced permanently, we stop sending to it. If you fixed or changed your mailbox, tell me and I will check it.The switch only covers PMs on the main site, not replies here in the forum.

@Joker hmm I just got an email notification of your reply which is a forum message but I didn't get an email notification from the main site for a PM from a few days ago asking for a reseed.

@thedude99 system notifications don't count as PM, only messages from other users. Ai least that has been my experience.

Quick follow-up after checking the mail side: nothing is broken. Our mail server has delivered about 5,300 mails today so far and around 99% of them arrived; the rest went to full or dead mailboxes.
@thedude99 the difference you noticed is real, and ianfontinell is right: a reseed request is a system message, not a PM from a person, and system messages never trigger the "You have received a PM" email. That mail only goes out for messages a member or staff writes to you, and only if you have not been on the site in the last 5 minutes. Forum notifications come from the forum's own settings, so they follow their own rules.
