      Have you even looked into the new law?

      Just because the Justice Minister says that the intent of the law isn't to stifle free speech, doesn't negate the wording of the law.

      The only good thing the law does is get rid of the blasphemy law.

      Good lord, man - you're like a teenaged GIRL! (I would know, I've raised FIVE of them)... (In what way? well, the posting STARTED about some Scottish law, but moved on to welcoming a "new" (to the forums, anyway) user to the fray... BUT WAIT! I didn't say anything about the new law, and for that I get lambasted for not even reading the law -- you know, the one I never even mentioned in my post??? Remember that?...)

      I didn't reply about your overblown, hyperbolic reaction to the new Scottish law - I really didn't feel a need to... I've come to recognize the difference between REAL posts and "click bait" ones...

      Rather, I reached out to the person who replied to, and that you then attacked for having a different opinion from you.

      I truly hope @homppeliboy realizes that this isn't normal for the forums, just the POLITICS section!

        @homppeliboy Welcome to posting on the boards. Unfortunately, you've noticed the worst thing about them: There are a few trolls on here who, when they disagree with your viewpoint, will start insulting the poster, rather than making arguments. This is the classical fallacy of arguing ad hominem...which essentially means that when someone can't make a reasonable argument, they just start calling people names. At that point, the forum thread has lost any value and is best ignored.

        I hope you post on other threads that don't get similarly corrupted.

          @eobox91103

          Which fallacy is it where someone simply says "no it isn't" and runs off?

          And YES, I'm a troll because I'm not a liberal. I'm used to that.

          @bi4smooth

          Anything that deviates from the swamp, you claim is hyperbolic or a CT.

          I didn't attack him for a different opinion, but for his useless claim that I'm wrong without expanding on why. Also his attack on Count Dankula without any evidence to back it up.

          You claim I'm posting click bait, but you refuse to even look it up.

            Thank you for admitting that you attack people, rather than address issues. That is the essence of the (useless and pitiful) ad hominem style that has no place in thoughtful discourse. It makes the Politics and Debate section almost useless.

                Yes, the new law could easily be used to restrict speech, it includes the new offence of "stirring up hatred," which is an incredibly broad and undefined term to use.

                The Scottish Police Federation said the bill would result in officers "policing what people think or feel"

                The only Nazis I'm aware of in Scotland are the members of the SNP, luckily I'm not in Scotland or saying this would probably count as a hate crime under the new bill.

                  What do you call this;

                  Lol, no they don't. Alarmist, whiny BS.

                  Is that an attack or is that just being a good liberal?

                    It probably counts as an attack. Unfortunately, nobody has a monopoly on name-calling and insulting other posters in the forum, although I've noticed a couple of people who seem to be competing for that title.

                      You probably don't realize it, but it makes you look like a hypocrite when you attack me for something, while blatantly ignoring the same thing from someone to who I was replying.

                        I made no such attack. My whole point is that attacking others is inappropriate for useful discussion. I try not to use the word "you" in a reply unless it's clearly complimentary.

                        I once heard a proverb that, "If you throw a stone into a pack of dogs, the one that yelps is the one that you hit." It is good to think on that...but as staunch dog lover, I'm a bit uncomfortable with the proverb.

                            @80sboy

                            Look up Nick Griffin going on BBC's Question Time. His free speech ended his political career, and for good reason.

                            Liberals think hate speech does not apply to the groups they hate, such as CIS white people, especially CIS white men. We saw this with NYT defending Sarah Jeong.

                            Liberals allow people to make homophobic comments and then lie about it, as long as they hate Trump. We saw this with Joy Reid.

                            There's a never-ending list of liberals approving of hate speech because it's hateful toward the people they hate.

                                    I live in Scotland and I can tell you that the new hate speech law isn't liked, outside of certain groups.

                                        We'll see what happens now that SNP + Greens = IndyRef2 majority in Holyrood, especially with a Green presiding officer and an SNP Deputy PO. I fear a UK High Court battle will happen next year...

                                          Are you saying this site should be a liberal echo chamber?

                                          If you hate free speech so much, does that mean I can ban for liberal speech and you'd be supportive? Of course, not. As we've seen elsewhere, then speech rules apply to liberals, they freak out.

                                            The opposition parties have the majority by 1 seat.

                                            I would not doubt if the LibDems will sell their souls, once again, for a bit of power and join the SNP and Greens.
