I am 65, and just recently realized that my mother has narcissistic personality disorder. She believes that she is better than everyone else. She is not capable of being empathetic to others. She doesnt really care about others. She only want to boost her own ego.

I dislike 90% of my relatives and I learned a long time ago that I don't have to put up with any of them if I don't want to. Even my brothers are in that group. I have one brother that is a pathological liar. Never has been able to tell the truth about anything and is only interested in talking about himself and what he has. During my mom's bout with pancreatic cancer, I tried to be as nice as I could to him. But after she died I heard through the grapevine that he had gone around to relatives asking for money to help pay for her funeral. OH MY GOD! I was so embarrassed. When I confronted him, he gave some excuse about he thought I might have needed the money but since I didn't ask, he went and bought a truck. We haven't spoken since.

Make your own family. I know there's social protocol that claims we must tolerate our blood relatives, but not every culture demands that. You can make alternate families or kinship circles with supportive people to supplement your family.

LOL yeah I have a great adopted family, although I did keep my baby sister when I divorced the rest - I talk to her daily. My older "adopted" sister far less, but mostly because she is too tangled up in the "Husband of the month".  I haven't spoken to my youngest brother since 2013 - and I am good with that, he is a pious little bible thumping asshat. My Mother said she was fine with me being gay so long as I didn't do anything gay around her - so yeah we don't talk much. I had a fantastic adopted Mother long before that little conversation so I haven't really missed her much. My man and I travel a lot for work, we see "family" mostly at Christmas, and that is usually more than enough to hold me for the year lol.

Family usually equates to drama, but it's where you'll gonna find support in tough times (from what i've seen not even 'best friends' are reliable in this aspect) so… i try to be 'diplomatic' with most relatives lol there's only a couple of them that i like or don't mind being around though, most are trouble.

My aunt is currently being annoying with me.  She's a traditional Chinese woman; married my uncle via a Chinese matchmaker.  Because I'm the last child in my generation who doesn't have a significant other, she's lately been trying to play matchmaker for me.  I just politely look at the picture of girls she has whenever she visits and say no.

I haven't told any of my family that I have a tendency for male sex (I refuse to tag myself as gay) not because I'm afraid but because I find it isn't any of their business with regards to my sex life.  That would obviously change if I find a significant other who happens to be a guy, but it's not their business until then.

Dude, that's awful.  I hope you avoid him as much as possible.

Some of my relatives from across the world are annoying, but it's very few, since I don't see them that much. However, their FRIENDS are the real pains in the ass.

In my case, it is the in-laws that are causing the issues.

My siblings have the worst judgment of character seriously…

In the Philippines, family is such a big part of our culture that it gets hard to fend off those annoying family members at times HAHAHAHA they really pry too much into our personal lives, judging us on our lovelife and chosen careers. Being gay here in general is already a cause for family members to become more annoying than ever

My uncle killed my grandpa. I didn't particularly like either one. I had been feuding with that side of the family for 15 years.

@semurg30 While there are some harsh and surprising responses above, I have to give you the Annoying Ass Family award-to-date, and I appreciate the unvarnished way you presented it.

The best part is, they're gone -- and you're not. Cheers, indeed.

I look at it this way: if you had an annoying friend, an abusive boyfriend or spouse, someone with a severe personality disorder (who doesn't try to deal with it), someone who mentally/emotionally abuses you, who constantly belittles you, etc., I think there would be near-universal agreement that you should disengage, stop trying to be friends, divorce them, do what you need to do to protect yourself, both physically and emotionally.

So why should it be different just because it's a family member. Life is too short to put up that shit and you're just not going to be able to "fix" them or the situation. Set boundaries, disengage, even terminate all contact if that's what it takes. Your life will be significantly improved.
