.mkv are considered the same format as .mp4.

      No ...
      I will paraphrase these :
While both .mkv and .mp4 are video container formats (they hold video, audio, and subtitles), they are not the same format. An MKV file generally supports a wider variety of codecs, multiple audio tracks, and advanced subtitles, whereas an MP4 file is highly compressed and universally supported by almost all devices and web browsers.

      Key Differences
Compatibility: MP4 is the industry standard for universal playback, meaning it natively works on iOS devices, smart TVs, and web browsers. MKV is an open-standard format that is fantastic for archiving but may require specific media players (like VLC Media Player) on some devices

Features: MKV shines when dealing with high-definition media because it can store virtually unlimited audio tracks, chapters, and high-quality subtitle files. MP4 limits the number of allowable tracks and formats.

Error Resilience: MKV has high error resilience, meaning the video can often still be played even if the file is partially damaged or corrupted. MP4 lacks this capability and can be rendered unplayable if broken

Quality & Size: The container itself doesn’t affect video quality. If the video and audio streams are identical, an MKV and MP4 file will be nearly identical in size and quality. However, MKV files appear larger when they bundle multiple audio/subtitle streams.

      Youtube Video

as I've said write MKV @ the end of your post title in order to be evaluated, about subcoded/hardcoded sub titles .srt file has nothing to do w/ it ... That is different story ...

Now the MOD staff has only the access to decide what is best ...

@john32123666 And as I said, I'm not talking about whether they ARE, I'm talking about how they're treated HERE. These are two different things.

I did confuse the issue earlier when talking to MrMazda by including .srt files in the equation. I'm talking about a straight .mkv file compared to a straight .mp4 file compared to s straight .avi file compared to a straight... which all contain exactly the same information.

If .mp4 and .mkv files are NOT considered the same format HERE, then - according to the rules - they're not duplicates. And, following that logic, why are other file types ("formats") not considered so. Or maybe they would be if the file's size also matched.

Yet I've had a torrent with exactly that scenario removed, and another where a single .mkv file containing multiple soft coded subs was nuked as a duplicate because a .mp4 with separate .srt files existed.

Other opinions are also available. They're not right, obviously, but they are available.

When it comes through reporting dupes :
Remember: we do allow the same movie in different formats. A duplicate must be the same size and file type.

I'm not going to pretend that I're read this whole thread because most of it is far beyond my understanding, but it does seem like these conversions are taking up a lot of my feed. The problem for me is that if I find one that looks interesting I now need to go and check my existing library to see if I already have the video, as there's little to be gained from downloading another copy in a different format. Every one of my downloads goes straight into Handbrake and reduced to 720p before I even look at them anyway.

The upsurge in these offerings has got me hoping that @joker might consider adding the ability to create a custom blacklist of seach terms so that we can filter certain terms out by default. It would help with being able to ignore conversions like this, as well as studios, performers or tags that we're just not interested in seeing.

The only issue having here is that why .mp4 container over .mkv container aka matroska is consider duplicates of the same size when it comes to size, while .avi, quicktime, etc .. are not ...

@frostycab Yeah. I was optimistic when @ianfontinell mentioned having created a search filter to automatically exclude them, but the only version I've been able to identify is a "Saved Search", which needs reapplying every time, even if it's saved. I tried that for a bit, but it's more of a pain than having to visually skip over these torrents when browsing a list.

Ideally, it would be great to be able to block uploads by a specific individual. I'm sure this could be done without needing to reveal to the blocker the actual name of the member being blocked.

Alternatively, perhaps being able to add a facility to automatically mark as "Hidden" either by a Title word search or by (Anonymous) user. Or, perhaps, even both.

Other opinions are also available. They're not right, obviously, but they are available.

@frostycab agreed, a blacklist is a lot more useful than the option to hide torrents one by one. i resorted to a custom userscript that does the job and is easy to handle.

Once again I'd like to remind everyone that it's not mandatory that you speak.

@john32123666 Absolutely agree. That's why my two bones of contention are clarity and consistency.

Clarity: If the powers that be have decided .mkv and .mp4 are the same, fine(ish). Just make it clear within the published rules covering duplicates rather than letting someone go through the work of creating a torrent - within the published rules - then nuking it, or requiring a huge amount of work to find it buried in a thread like this. Publishing a reference point should also lead to consistency. Two of my nuked torrents were not duplicates, judged by what has been said here, yet they WERE nuked as duplicates and remained so, even after I queried this.

Consistency: Primarily out of curiosity, as you say, if .mp4 is considered the same as ,mkv, then why isn't .avi, .wmv, etc.?

If the idea is to stop the site getting bogged down with multiple torrents with, essentially, the same files, perhaps file type shouldn't even be a differentiator. There are a plethora of file converter apps - many free - for those of us hung up on all files in our collection being the same type.

The different "format" should be resolution: 480p, 720p, 1080p, etc. If a 720p file already exists, whatever the file type, an upload of a similarly sized file is a duplicate, regardless of file type.

Other opinions are also available. They're not right, obviously, but they are available.

@ianfontinell Do you think it would hard to implement?

For example, I'd start mine out with such search terms as:

                                      • AV1 encoded by ab-av1
                                      • Men At Play
                                      • Charturbaters Collection
                                      • Austin Wolfe
                                      • Lydian Grey
                                      • Vintage
                                      • Bara
                                      • Scat
                                      • Piss
                                      • Gooning
                                      • ...etc,

thus reducing the amount of stuff to trawl through each and every day. If possible it could be complimented by a Whitelist feature that would show uploads containing whitelisted terms even if they share blacklisted ones. That would allow for a scene to show even from a blacklisted studio if it contained a whitelisted performer.

                                      Taste the rainbow! Eat crayons!

@ianfontinell Well therre are some performers who are just an immediate turn-off. I dislikle most of the stuff that was released back when VCRs were a thing. MAP is just ick to me, and all of those big chaturbate collections usually have less than 5 files worth watching. Bara just seems to be anime furry MAP. LOL

Hopefully you see what I'm aiming at though. There are some things that will always get skipped no matter what, so the ability to filter them out would be great. 🙂
