I suppose it suggests that the relationship is monogamous.
It probably is required for adoption.
Probably results in an income tax break.

In the US, at least, it applies all the "married couple" legal assumptions to the relationship, such as:

        • visitation in hospitals and consultation about treatments.

        • distribution of assets at death, especially in community property states.

Of course it varies from country to country, or even state to state, but in general there are certain rights that you can only claim if you're legally married, or in some countries, if you're able to prove you have a long lasting stable union with your partner. In these cases you can make use of health insurance, have responsibility over each other in case of medical emergencies, claim security benefits, filling joint taxes, inheritance rights, priority for adoptions, property sharing... And as immigration is very common in the US, marriage is an important step in assuring the security of the relationship.

Disadvantages are just as abundant, you can become financially responsible for one another, if one acquires a debt you'll go broke together if you're both unable to pay, so you have a decreased financial autonomy... Upon divorce you might partially lose property acquired after marriage, or in some contracts, before marriage as well.

In sum, the advantages and disadvantages of gay people getting married are exactly the same as those of straight people... But we all know that people get married because it's an important step in becoming "successful" as an individual, not all af us can become a millionarie but we can all get married.

@ianfontinell-0 the "shared debt" problem with a marriage reminds me of something else...

if an unmarried couple both sign a lease for an apartment - and they break up (as happens quite often), and one moves out.. then what happens?
