What is scraping?

The new note on the front page after login mentions massive amounts of scraping. What is that, and what are it's affects?

Scraping is when your torrent client talks to the tracker.
It updates your ratio.
It lets the tracker know what data you have to share and/or want.
The more scrapes, the more stress on the tracker. We try to balance the speed of getting your torrent data with the abilities of the server.
