Sometimes people post an entire DVD, with iso and vob and bup and so on. These torrents are ginormous. If I put a DVD into my Windoze computer, I can rip it into a tidy little .avi file, but if I have the complete DVD, as described, on my hard drive, in its own directory, there does not seem to be any way to do the same thing. That cannot be right.

IF I can rip a physical DVD into an .avi or other simple file, why cannot the same information in a directory on my hard drive behave just the same and be ripped just as easily by pointing some handy freeware program at the directory instead of the drive? With the same information in both places, this should be easy, right?

Hell, it don't even gots to be freeware, just readily available and able to treat a directory the same way it treats a drive.

It would be great if someone could help with this. THEN I can move on to asking my next question, which is about a decent DVD burner. I had one, no idea what it was, but when the drive crashed, that went away and I've not found anything practical and effective since then. But one step at a time. We who are ignorant (and I'm clueless enough for two, so "we" is probably the right word), await with thanks ahead of time.

I think you can use HandBrake as long as the DVD files aren't copy-protected. Select the Video_TS folder as a source and click on start (or tweak the settings if you want to make the files even smaller, but normally it's just fine). You can download it at https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

I'm not going to get into specifics, but you may want to check out a program called "AnyDVD" which is sometimes referred to as "AnyDVD HD"… I think you'll find it quite useful for what you want.

I use since.. hum.. 1999/2000 DVDshrink : freeware that destroys the encryption security of dvds so you can copy them.

Also best burners are of course Plextor ( more expensive usually but worth it) .
