"better" is subjective. everyone is different and it depends on your own personal preferences. but yeah, if you haven't done it in a while sometimes it's better to hop on that way you're in control of the action and you can stop when/if it gets uncomfortable.

It is better when you and your top are not experienced or not really intimate with each other, so as a bottom I feel more at ease having some initial control. When a top knows his bottom well, though, and cares about him, it doesn't really matter.

For me it was easier on my side at first, it meant i was relaxed and comfortable before and during then entry phase.  Then after that, I find riding was good to to be in control.

Starting out on top gives you more control of the initial entry and allows you to loosen up, after a few strokes I find I'm ready and can be in any position the old bod allows ;D

If it is a real long and/or extra thick cock it is easier to start out riding it. Once I have taken it all in than anyway the top likes is fine. For average hung it doesn't make much if a difference
