Stereotypic portrayal of gays in movies and other media

I belong to a country where being out as a homosexual is not accepted very well within the society, saying so I am fairly young and have not met another homosexual in my life. Now the movies, tele-series and other media most of the time portray us as very shallow and materialistic, I know which is not mostly the case. So I am intrigued why are gays portrayed so?
