You get what you pay for, I wouldn't recommend ANY free VPN.

You probably do get what you paid for.

I installed a free VPN yesterday and it does exactly what I want - allows me access to sites like demonoid and torrentday which are blocked by my ISP (in UK) after a court order.

        I wasn't looking for security 🙂

If you're using the free Hola, don't be too confident in your computing. If you're using the free Hola browser button, you're actually opening your computer to act as an exit node for other Hola members. This means that you potentially open yourself to the security hole of having other users tunnelling through your internet connection to download illegal content.

All I'm saying here is that you need to be careful when using the free Hola. Also, Hola will only act as a method of proxy for certain websites only. Unlike a regular full VPN, Hola does not tunnel all your internet traffic through the VPN by default. This can only be done if you pay the $5 USD per month for the paid version of Hola and use their full PPTP or L2TP VPN services, which are not part of the free browser button.

I tried looking for one but other than paid ones I couldn't really find many/any that work with P2P and such.

I have purchase my VPN, but was told a while back about hide.me, not to sure how good it is but was told that you do not have to download anything onto your computer.  You just go to the site and type your address in and it is suppose to hide you on the internet.  Again, I never used it but a friend used it a few times.  https://hide.me/en/proxy

Remember me with smiles and laughter
For that's how I will remember you all
For if you can only remember with tears
Then please don't remember me at all.

With hide.me you have to sign up for a plan. There is a free plan that you need to renew every month. On a speed test it cuts my download speed to one quarter of the maximum, that is from 100Mb/s to 25Mb/s.

I use it to log onto sites that are blocked by my ISP (UK court order), grab the torrent(s) I want. I then quit hide.me and download torrents as I usually do.

PS have just tried the hide.me proxy and it works. I might not bother to renew my free plan

I purchased a lifetime subscription to ProXPN and use the Netherlands server to download my torrents.  A 1 time payment is much more preferable than the monthly or yearly subscriptions.  You have to find a "lifetime deal" because their website doesn't offer lifetime memberships.  I was able to find mine at https://stacksocial.com/sales/proxpn-premium-lifetime which is only available for another 3 days I believe.

Hands down, PIA (privateinternetaccess.com) is one of the best VPNs on the market.  Year after year, ranked as one of the top VPN services on Torrent Freak for its high priority to ensuring user privacy.  Ownership is by those outside of the U.S. jurisdiction.

Huge selection of access points across the globe and growing (several hundreds of IPs utilized).  $40 annual fee that includes coverage for up to 5 devices/computers.  Ability to sign up anonymously using bitcoin or a wide variety of store gift cards.  Super-easy setup with adjustable encryption levels for data encryption, data authentication and handshake protocols.  Includes built in IPv6 leak protection, DNS leak protection, VPN Kill switch and supports port forwarding.  Speeds are better than other VPNs with DL speeds of up to 4MB/s and UL speeds up to 2MB/s.  Extremely stable connection that does not fluctuate on and off like other services.

Many of our staff have used this service for several years with ZERO security leaks from our individual torrent activities.  Personally, I've used it for 3 years.  Phenomenal service for the best price.

Should I expect a significant drop in download speed with a VPN. I've tried two and my maximum speed was reduced to a quarter of my potential speed, 100Mb/s.

You say you get 4MB/s (32Mb/s) - is that your normal speed without a VPN?

PS I have a friend who uses PIA and he is very happy with it

Sure, definitely expect the use of a proxy/VPN will significantly slow max capacity down to about 15-25% max capacity.

I too have the 100Mb/s internet connectivity, so with PIA, I have a reduction to about 35% capacity on average.  At times I can get a torrent DL speed up to 7-8MB/s with PIA, so preservation of 50-60% of max capacity, but this depends on seeding sources.  Bottom line, it's the highest I've seen of any VPN and am so impressed with the strength of the connection - no failures to remain connected.  Great, consistent service.

Riddler, thanks for that reply. I didn't know if I'd picked a couple of bad ones to try out or it was the norm.

                            Now I know 🙂

If I do decide on a VPN I will certainly put PIA at the top of the list

I would also reccomend PureVPN as well as PIA , they are both equally as secure as each other , though as an Aussie user i have found , hence the reason for my swapping , that Pure seems to work better here in AU than PIA , pricewise taking into account the Aussie Dollar , PureVPN have been offering Australian users two years for the price of one  and smart DNS.

I use the premium version of Cyberghost VPN. No noticeable drop in speed and performance. And I download torrents moderately and frequently change IP location
