Leather harnesses- where did they come from

Just wondering - where do leather harnesses come from - I mean, chaps and jocks all started life as real items of clothing, but whats the origin of harnesses? It seems to be medieval warrior wear, at least in movies (and He-Man) but I have never actually seen a real life historical example. Are they solely out of the imagination of BDSM aficionados?
