Would an Administrator or Moderator please explain the confusing statistics for a torrent:

      Shortbus (2006)    http://tracker.gaytor.rent/details.php?id=14429

Although "Added" today (2009-09-10 18:31:57) and receiving 1389 "Hits",
It has been "Snatched 707426 time(s)"
      with "Totaltraffic 469.79 TB"

      Huh?

Could this be related to the fact that, although the torrent's "private" flag is set,
the "dht_backup_enable" flag is also true (under "azureus_properties") ?

The explanation can be found in the first sentence of the description:

        Original upload: 2008-12-28 11:33:10

Which means this is an old torrent having been "refreshed", "promoted" or "bumped" up to the top of the listing.

Now the snatched number is certainly wrong. This comes from bad torrent clients, wrongly reporting to our tracker. Some of this effects you can see in the snatched list by seeing the same member having it snatched multiple times.

          Thanks for responding, Uwe,
but I still do not understand how torrent clients can be so "bad"
as to produce such a bizarre discrepancy between
the number of "Hits" and times "Snatched" for any torrent.

Also: why is that "dht_backup_enable" flag allowed?

I do think that you should check your stats or there is another issue.

This torrent can not have 8428202 downloads

There was another issue (not really clear if we found all cases yet) : Some clients erroneously send a FINISH instead of a STOP signal when you stop seeding 😞

And such values can happen in more than a year (bumped torrent) 😞

There is definitely something wrong.  If you search/sort the torrent list by the number of "snatches", the top torrents have over 2.5 BILLION "snatches".  Maybe I'm misunderstanding what "snatch" means (no pun intended) – doesn't it mean the number of time it was downloaded?

Yes, but our tracker relies on what the members torrent clients are reporting to it, see the already given answers:

If you look at the list of people that downloaded a torrent, you will see that some people are listed many, many times.

I remember 1 torrent where the uploader was the only one listed as snatching {finished downloading} the torrent and he was listed nearly 200 times. He had just changed from one client to another and suddenly this happened.  Once he switched to uTorrent {per my recommendation} he quit having the problem.

I'm glad I'm not alone in wondering how 4 billion snatches happened.

So are we - it is a couple of client programs (especially multi protocol clients) which do not follow the BitTorrent protocol. That is why we urgently warn to use such "wannabe" programs and only recommend capable client programs.

Alas it is not really easy to filter out such wrong protocol messages on our side 😞
