CHICAGO — A Skokie woman fabricated an elaborate story about being detained by immigration officials upon arriving at O’Hare Airport, according to a Wisconsin sheriff who has filed a defamation lawsuit against the woman and an elected official who shared the story.
Supporters of Sundas ‘Sunny’ Naqvi said the 27-year-old and five other people — all legal residents — were detained for 30 hours by Customs and Border Protection agents upon arriving at O’Hare March 5 from a work trip to Turkey.
At a press conference attended by multiple elected officials, her supporters claimed the group was taken to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Broadview and later to the Dodge County Jail in Wisconsin, where they were released the morning of March 7, allegedly spending nearly 43 hours in custody.
The story drew widespread outrage, given Naqvi’s status as a U.S. citizen. But soon after Naqvi’s claims went public, the Department of Homeland Security and the Dodge County Sheriff each disputed Naqvi’s narrative.
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, which has an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security for immigration detentions, said last month that jail logs showed no female inmates booked at the time of Naqvi’s alleged detention. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office also never found evidence of Naqvi being held at the Broadview facility.
Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt announced Friday he has filed a defamation lawsuit against Naqvi, with the sheriff sharing additional evidence of text messages, surveillance video, hotel documents and jail logs that he said proves a hoax on the part of Naqvi.
“There is no record of booking, there is no record of detention, no record of release, no contact with the individual, no transfer from federal agency,” he said. “At no point was Sundas Naqvi in the custody of the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.”
Schmidt provided text message screenshots and a hotel guest log that revealed Naqvi stayed in a Hampton Inn & Suites in Rosemont from March 5-8, the dates she claimed to be in federal custody.

It's sad that this idiot tried to pull this over on the public (and the police)...
But its even MORE sad that very reasonable people - even many MAGA supporters - immediately assumed her story was legit ... because it tracks with current ICE behavior!
If she'd have made these claims during Trump 1.0 or Biden, MOST PEOPLE would have assumed she was wrong, mistaken, lying, or at least mis-representing things: our country doesn't do those things!
Now, however, the assumption was that she was making a valid complaint... because our country DOES do thinks like that today!
She'll be punished, as she should be... but WE (Americans) should look at the larger picture and recognize what this says about our country... no, not her actions... OUR response to her accusations!
