If you are on Linux there is a simple shell script collection called vcsi ( https://github.com/amietn/vcsi ) some distros have packages for the script. Just install it and run
vcsi FILENAME
in a shell and you'll get your video contact sheet.

It's easy to generate thumbnails for single or batch files and also lets you browse the grid "interactively" and jump to certain points. I love it when browsing my collection hahah
It's free for HD videos but you have to pay $5 for 1080p... I couldn't find a crack so I ended up buying and don't regret it(pic from their site)

It took me a whille to find a linux program to do this. I tried ffmpeg a few commands but no luck. Eventually I stumbled upon SMPlayer. It has an option to create a page of thumbnails. Or a 'thumbnail generator' in smplayer world.
