New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill Tuesday repealing a controversial statute commonly known as the "walking while trans" ban.

Both houses of the New York Legislature voted Tuesday to pass the bill that repeals a 1976 penal law statute aimed at prohibiting loitering for the purpose of prostitution, but which ultimately led to years of law enforcement discrimination against trans people of color.

If you are dressed like a hooker and hanging out in the hooker areas, it's extremely likely that you are a hooker.

Why don't they just legalize prostitution so it can be regulated and taxed.

Street hooking is a large part of how they end up dead.

Agreed, likely. But even if one falls through the crack . . . ouch.

Am reminded of Wesley Snipe's role in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar - some of what that character did could be one of the ones that fell through the crack.

Am for legalization as well.

Other than a few, particularly puritan jurisdictions, it's been my experience in the US that the anti-prostitution laws are almost exclusively aimed at "street hookers" - e.g. those most in need of help, not harassment! (To be clear: I mean in enforcement, not in the laws themselves.)

I'm all for legalizing and "licensing" prostitution. But key is keeping the "rough trade" out of it... if someone's doing it because they want to... fine. If they're being forced or coerced, that's another matter.
