Windoze 10 search on my desktop PC

When I was carried kicking and screaming into Win 10, one of the things that happened is that when I search for something, a giant section of my screen is squandered on a Properties panel that will not close and will not go away. Supposedly CTRL-ALT-6 does something but that seems to be a lie.
Please help me shut this thing down. It is driving me mad.
