What are "Invites"?

I keep seeing them on the bonus page, but I don't actually know what an "Invite" means, what it entails and why they'd be a rare commodity.

When someone stumbles upon this site, he has no way to register directly (usually). there must be one who is already a member sending him an invite (a line of code) and then he can register using this invite.
When we want to send an invite to others, we need to buy it with bonus points.
