To avoid a lot of frustration and wasted time.. I suggest that whenever someone uploads a file that is the exact same file size as any existing file on the site, a file comparison should be done on the files to determine if they are identical.  This could be done automatically, or only done manually by a moderator when they get a "duplicate" notification.

If they are the same, instead of removing the new post, simply rename the new file to match the old file, and have the new post point to the old post.  That way, the original poster gets credit for the upload.  People don't download the same thing twice, and if nobody is seeding it, then the new uploader gets credit when they SEED it.

That would also prevent old movies posted years ago from being buried forever.  If someone posts it again.. it gets a new life, but if someone already has it, they won't get stuck downloading it again, because it points to the original torrent.

If someone gets cute and decides to get around this and post the same stuff twice.. (I'm not giving any ideas on how to do that).  Then that person should never get a spanking no matter how much they beg for it.  Instead, they should be only allowed to view the STRAIGHT porn on the site as punishment or garbage from FlavaWorks and Treasure Island Media.

I'm all for it, but I'm not a software engineer or anything of the sort and that kind of feature still sounds overly complex to implement.

Not sure how fast that would be there is over 200,000 torrents currently. For each upload it would need to check all others. It might be resource intensive.

Also, you want to check to make sure it's the same filetype too.

Given the way that torrents work, this is simply not possible. 😞

The "report a duplicate" feature on each torrent page allows users to report these things–I don't know how many reports are made, and whether our Gentle Moderators are able to keep up with them.

If I see a duplicate, I'll report it, and also make a comment to that effect with a link to the original torrent.  Many users will seed the original.

I do the same thing, but I would like to suggest to get a message box I the "report" area, so its make it easier for the moderator. There are duplicate torrents that are not the exact size (they remove some pictures or a small video, in the case of collections) to make it different size and upload it. So the original torrent is 8.37gb and the duplicate is 8.20. I just dont think its fare they get away with this haha. If they at least took the time to compress the videos or add something new, it would be completely different, not just steal someone else´s torrent. It would be also a good thing to have redirected to the original torrent. (In my case I open the torrents in different tabs on the explorer, to download them later, and when later I open a tab I just find it was duplicate, and don´t even remember the name to look for the original haha)

Well, just a suggestion 🙂 As always, it´s easier said than done haha

I stopped reporting duplicates because most of the time, they weren't being removed and I wasn't being given credit for reporting them.  I figure the mods are busy with higher priority tasks.

I've occasionally received a PM showing that I've received a point credit, but most of the time not.  Perhaps the moderator looks at point bonus total (nearly 6000) and assumed, correctly, that I don't need the points.

I do know that the duplicate-removal process works:  I reported a duplicate a couple of days ago, and that torrent did indeed disappear–and the older one was "promoted" as a retread for users to download.  I didn't receive a "point bonus" note, which is fine with me.

Yeah, its not even for the points, if its a duplicate mistake its ok, but whe it´s an stealed torrent just doesnt seem fair

I appreciate getting the points as a reward whether or not I actually need them.

The duplicate files have not been removed when I've checked after not getting points, but I was not checking for a long time so I don't know for sure.

The other thing I noticed is that when reporting duplicate files that are not 100% exactly the same, they don't get removed even though they meet the site's definition of duplicate files.

So it just seems very inconsistent.

I wouldn't have even brought it up because I know the mods are very busy just keeping the site up and running but I am glad someone else mentioned it!  :cheesy2:
