Help - VPN for dummies?

Hello - i am totally beginner at this so i am asking what and how to use VPN, i am a bit paranoid and with increasing of my downloands and a bit uploads a i starting to be scared, few months ago they got some person who uploaded a few movie and he needed to pay a lot of money…
so what i need? Do I really need to pay money? when i writed VPN on my computer it opened - create connection to VPN (translated) - internet address, use cchip card? or i use Forticlient SSLVPN for some stuff at college (we need it to get to library)?

In order to ensure your security with a VPN, you really do need a paid service. I personally use PrivateVPN. You will find that their Windows client will take care of pretty much everything you will need to use the service.

I'm an even bigger dummy…this is probably a a stupid question, but I've spent the last 2 hours trying to find an answer....how do you use a VPN?

I currently have the free Hola VPN and the free VPN that comes with the Opera browser. I know those probably aren't the best for whatever reason (though I'm not sure on any details)...but even if I were to buy one, how do you even use it? Do you just turn it on on the browser you use to download a torrent file? Or is it important to keep it on while you are downloading/seeding videos? Or is it more complicated- do you have to like press buttons and stuff on your uTorrent application? Or is it something else?

OR PERHAPS someone might just redirect me to an article/video/post about using VPN for porn for NOOBS like me?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network.

When you connect to a VPN server all of your internet traffic is encrypted and sent via the server. It doesn't matter what you do online, everything goes via the server.

As all your traffic is going through their VPN server, the people running the VPN server can "see" everything you are doing. As running the server costs money, if you do not hand over cash for a connection, then you are handing over your privacy. Not that there's any guarantee that a provider of a paid connection isn't also spying on you.

But if you try to use a "free" service, they ARE spying.

A website called TorrentFreak (other websites are available) will sometimes publish a review of VPN providers.

Usually you install the VPN app for the provider you are using. After you have started your computer, you can open the VPN app (if it doesn't open on startup), then choose what server you want to connect to. Once the VPN is connected, all your traffic is sent through the VPN until you disconnect from the VPN again. It is a separate app from any browser that you may be using and ALL internet traffic is sent through it when it is turned on.

I just downloaded one that said it wouldn't slow down my connection. But after trying it out for a couple hours I am sure it greatly slows down my internet speed. Downloading torrents slowed down by probably a factor of 4 and loading sites/videos pornhub became very slow when usually it only takes a few seconds at its slowest.

You are inserting another point in your network traffic…. there is always going to be some impact to bandwidth no matter what the service states.

Switch to another server that is closer to your location. If you are trying to get around region-based IP blocks try switching to another server &/or location in your client. The server you;re on could simply be overloaded. One with fewer users could be noticeably faster.

If you are torrenting kill IPv6. A lot of providers do not fully support IPv6 and leaking occurs. Check with your provider to find out if they fully support it and hit the those "what is my IP" pages to see if you have leaks. Some specificly target IPv6.
