not using any antivirus is the best option, just don't open any suspicious exe or insert random flash drives and you'll be fine

I have used AVG Free for years.  Never had any problems.  Of course I usually use some common sense when downloading and surfing as well.    ;D

Emsisoft Anti-Malware is the best out there I am using it since the past 8 years and have never been infected with a virus. It also has an option to detect and delete ransomeware here is the link for it. It is very fast and efficient with hourly updates keeping its database up to date with the latest infections to kick their arse. Plus one can try it for free for 30 days and if they like it then you can buy it. Here is the link for it

The best AV is common sense. Avoid risky sites, activities and software and you should be fine.

There is no "the best" antivirus, they all have their pros and cons. My advise is to use a known antivirus, a scriptblocker (like NoScript if u have firefox), a firewall and common sense like the previous posters stated.

Also, no matter what virus software that you are using, I am a huge advocate of also running Spy Bot Search & Destroy from safer-networking.org as it looks for different kinds of threats to your computer that most ordinary virus software does now, however it does not get the kind of stuff that most antivirus software does. This is why I recommend using it in addition to a virus software.

I personally think, that any AV is good, as long as you pay for it. Those ad-bloated programms like Avira Antivir is just ridiculous. But also use common sense 😉
