I was born just beyond the American Economic Depression, so didn't feel the intensity of the tragedy, but lived with the fall out.

Here's a quick timeline of that era:

So, i have a very emotional-crying reaction to this song: Brother,  can you spare a dime.

        Nocturne “Live” (1995) Secret Garden

I loved this the first time I heard the studio recording years ago and this was my first time hearing the “live” version.

Usually liking the studio stuff over the live, this live recording was a pleasant surprise in that I liked it as much, if not more than the studio one.

        That violin…is…um…well, it’s just something–definitely moving. 😞

        “Live” performance…

Music video (kind of cheesy, but probably didn’t seem as much when it first came out over 20 years ago)…

Ellis' song, "Nocturn" reminded me of a totally different, but equally beautiful piece by Yanni, "Nightingale" as offered here:

From the cheer up song thread, Katy Perry's Teenage Dream makes me sad but not cry.  It's more lost time.

The first song from the Last Unicorn movie was so beautifully illustrated, it made me tear up too.  Sung my America?

The title sequence from The Last Unicorn makes me cry, too. 😢 And, yes, it was composed by Jimmy Webb and sung by the band, America. That whole soundtrack is probably the only reason I ever managed to develop an appreciation for the band, haha.

On the topic of soundtracks, Art Garfunkel's song, Bright Eyes (from Watership Down) completely destroys me. That whole movie just depresses the hell out of me. The last time I watched it, I was despondent for weeks.

The traditional Welsh lullaby - Suo Gân. Eversince I heard it in the movie, Empire of the Sun, it always bring tears to my eyes

                    Stone sour : zzyzx
I don't know how else to put this.
It's taken me so long to do this.
I'm falling asleep and I can't see straight.
My muscles feel like a melee,
                    My body's curled in a U-shape.
I put on my best, but I'm still afraid.
Propped up by lies and promises.
Saving my place as life forgets.
Maybe it's time I saw the world.
I'm only here for a while.
And patience is not my style,
And I'm so tired that I got to go.
What am I supposed to hide now?
What am I supposed to do?
Did you really think I wouldn't see this through?
Tell me I should stick around for you.
Tell me I can have it all.
I'm still too tired to care and I got to go.
                    I'm following suit and directions.
I crawl up inside for protection.
I'm told what to do and I don't know why.
                    I'm over existing in limbo
I'm over the myths and placebos
I don't really mind if I just fade away
I'm ready to live with my family.
I'm ready to die in obscurity
Cause I'm so tired that I got to go.
Where am I supposed to hide now?
What am I supposed to do?
You still don't think I'm gonna see this through?
Tell me I'm a part of history.
Tell me I can have it all.
I'm still too tired to care and I got to go.

                    Staind: something to remind you
                    _So this is it
                    I say goodbye
To this chapter of my ever-changing life
                    And there's mistakes
                    The path is long
And I'm sure I'll answer for them when I'm gone

So when the day comes in
The sun won't touch my face
Tell the ones who cared enough
That I finally left this place

                    Its been so cold
                    Look at my face
All the stories it will tell I can't erase
                    The road is long
                    Just one more song
A little something to remind you when I'm gone
                    When I'm gone

                    The road to hell
                    Along the way
Is paved with good intentions so they say
                    And some believe
                    That no good deed
That go unpunished in the end or so it seems

                    So this is it
                    I say goodbye
To this chapter of my ever-changing life
                    And there's mistakes
                    The path was long
And I'm sure I'll answer for them when I'm gone
                    When I'm gone_

Jason Walker : there shouldn't be a good in goodbye.

_After the silence, after the last words.
Caught in the silence. Caught in between.
After the madness. After the slow shock.
Before the wave hits, the flood comes rushing in.

This is the bad before the worse.
This is the storm before the storm
I haven't even hit the bottom of this ocean floor.
This is the bend before the break.
This is the mercy not the grace.
This is the proof and not the faith i try to find.
There shouldn't be a good in goodbye.

If I never loved you, if I never felt your kiss.
If I never had you. I know that I…I still would have mourned you.
I would have missed your smile.
If it wasn't so worth it, this wouldn't be...
Oh this wouldn't be the bad before the worse and the storm before the storm.

I haven't even hit the bottom of this ocean floor.
This is the bend before the break.
This is the mercy not the grace.
This is the proof and not the faith I try to find.
There shouldn't be a good in goodbye.

I know this is gonna get better ohh.

This is the bitter not the sweet.
This is the take and not the keep.
And I haven't even reached the bottom of this ocean floor.

There shouldn't be a good in goodbye._

“I Can’t Make You Love Me” Bonnie Raitt (1991)

                      Youtube Video

Although the song doesn’t actually make me cry, it does move me–such a sad situation to be in. 😞

1970's baby here. Grew up with music playing in the house all the time. Music that makes me cry always has 3 traits: a strong vocal delivery, compelling lyrics, and a driving track (unless accapella)

With that said, here are a few picks:

1970's: Gladys Knight and the Pips "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" or Lenny Williams "Cause I Love You"
1980's: George Michael  "Careless Whisper" better lyrics / that sax solo! or "One More Try" better track / better vocal delivery and connection
1990's: Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You"  this one has it all for me    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK4hweZRU0k
2000's: Maxwell "This Woman's Work"  amazing remake of the Kate Bush song  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkeCNeHcmXY
2010's: Adele "One and Only" the gospel choir bridge is everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4r-c4I_9Rc

                        I know it ain't easy
                        Giving up your heart
                        I know it ain't easy
                        Giving up your heart

A similar choice (gospel choir included) was made by Madonna in one of her most powerful songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBaoOfbh3hY

But, IMHO the song of Madonna used the choir in a better way: it's like a crescendo.

                          I'm not religious
                          But I feel so moved
