In the US, I know that PayPal also allows a credit card to be used without a PayPal account.  To "connect" PayPal with a direct debit FROM a checking or saving account DOES require an account. I consider PayPal extremely secure and have had an account with them for many years.  I have it connected to both my credit card and my checking account – yet I keep my balance with them at zero. But to each, their own decision.
