TINDER confusion..

I have never used Tinder, but I suspected that someone I know is on it.
I installed it, and was surprised that there is no way to SEARCH for profiles on Tinder! It seems to be completely random! Also, it is extremely difficult to navigate. You can't just pop from one profile to the next, it's very cumbersome to see new profiles. Am I doing something wrong?I used to search gay dating sites for my local area 15 years ago, and I would find profiles of people I knew. All of those sites seem to be gone.
I suspect these sites died out once they started requiring $$ to join.
