ACLU attacks free speech - in court
-
no surprise. ACLU went commie-lib a long time ago.
Still, here it is.
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/22/us/politics/aclu-employee-fired-race-bias.html
- Katherine Oh is Asian woman, worked there for years
- often accused fellow ACLU-ers of sexism, misogyny, sexual abuse etc
- after some years, ACLU fired her
- parties go to administrative court (NLRB)
- ACLU admits her comments showed NO overt racism, yet says she "seriously hurt" Black colleagues
- judge-only trial in DC just ended
- judge will rule in a few months
Says, New York Times:
The [ACLU] defense - arguing for an expansive definition of what constitutes racist or racially coded speech - has struck some labor and free-speech lawyers as peculiar, since the organization has traditionally...operat[ed] on the principle that it may not like what someone says, but will fight for their right to say it...
[ACLU argued in court,] it was irrelevant [that] Ms. Oh bore no racist ill will; [only relevant] that her Black colleagues were...injured.Fun.

update: she won.
The judge said the ACLU's racism claims [against Ms. Oh] were not supported by evidence, as Oh's critiques targeted superiors regardless of race and were metaphorical or professional in nature (e.g., a Zoom comment about "beatings will continue until morale improves" was not literal or racial).
