For at least since 2014...... (we all know it was much longer).... CIA has used Ukraine for acts of war on Russia, acts that even NYT now describes as "shadow war".

Now. NYT, like WaPo, is known FBI & CIA mouthpiece.

So why would NYT suddenly reveal some of CIA's secret history with Ukraine?

Because CIA wanted them to. Article admits, NYT was invited into CIA bases of Ukraine:
