Turning the corner from friendship to relationship

Is it even possible? I started going out with a guy, and after a few dates I felt like I was 100% in the friendzone. I'm an old fashioned guy and I don't like sex on the first date…usually...so we went out a few times and just had fun, had nice talks and so on...but I want more. I went in for a kiss and got the head-turn away.
Should I just stop at this point? Am I in the friend zone with no escape?
