While I have to say my favorite director in this subgenre would be Mario Bava, many EARLY Dario Argento films are quite well-done. It is truly a shame that the older he became, the more he felt a need to include "tits'n'ass"

Suspiria is Amazing, one of my favourites. But as you say, he wasn't really able to repeat that feat in his later films.

It's true. Mario Bava is the best, but Dario Argento is worth to considering. Lucio Fulci is another one. A good source is wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giallo. Maybe, even more sinthetical http://www.kinoeye.org/02/11/needham11.php

Fulci is a master at combining gore & camp, I always thought. His films can be just plain silly one moment but drenched in blood the next.
