What's the deal with these chinese concoctions that supposedly help us with our health? Being part of an asian family I've kind of grown up with it, but I'm really starting to question whether juiced deer antlers are really something that will help.

A lot of plants in particular have credible health benefits.
For example tea tree oil is an antiseptic, aloe vera is a topical anti-irritant, and let's not forget the fun stuff like weed and opium (maybe benefits?).

I think some things are quite out there though, I personally wouldn't trust apothecary-type medicine. I want science to heal me not my grandma with some mushrooms she found in the backyard.

It's funny how people make fun of Chinese medicine, granted some of the shit is just too out there like deer penis and such, but where do you think a lot of modern medicines came from?

Aspirin originally came from the bark of the willow tree, BTW the willow has the buffers in it so it doesn't upset the stomach.

The problem is with natural or Chinese medicine you don't know how strong or weak the mixture is without trying.

That's exactly why I trust modern medicine over herbal remedies. If I'm extremely ill, I don't want to take that chance. It's barely regulated - if at all. I know exactly whats in modern medicines, what the side effects are, and how much I need to take.

I know that a lot of modern medicines derive from plants, I have no doubt, but that's not the issue for me. And don't mistake it for me making fun of culture and tradition. I come from a country where Chinese medicines are not the norm, so it's natural that I'm wary about it.

I'm more than willing to experience another culture, but not when I'm sick.
