You definitely need lube, I find a beeswax and oil mix really good, gives a nice smooth coating on my fingers. I usually do this at shower. I don't have any lube so I use shower gel and its fine and great.
I did this at shower mostly because of the ass "dirt". We don't always have clean inside, so we need to make it clean before and/or after fingering. After fingered myself, washed everything clean, then hot shower will feel great.
