Uwe,Thank you! It was my "hosts" file as you had suggested. And yes, I must have at some point in the past have made an entry when there was some sort of DNS issue going on or when GTRU got a new IP that had not yet been updated on many of the DNS servers.
A very simple fix.

Actually you were pointing to that cause by all the detailed description about your port forwarding and firewall settings to work, but then saying:
… I have not used the GTRU site in over a year to connect to a tracker ...
The last IP change was some months ago. The URL for the site has changed at the same time so it is not effected by the hosts file, but the tracker URL didn't change. That made the site usable, but torrenting not working with the hosts file sleeping still modified from upon.

as I am having the same problem right now with these exact problem, I found that I don't need to open up another thread and create unneeded clutter.
However, I have not modified my host file except for adding 2 or 3 sites that are for the purpose of ad-blocking and is no way related to gt.ru. Yet here I am having this problem. I was hoping some other solution could present itself here if I asked.
Addendum: My gay-torrent.net tracker is working fine it's just my gt.ru acting up.

Cannot download/upload anything
I have read the forum and tried the suggested solution with erasing all five lines in the host list that included gaytor.rent. (And, of course, rebooted my PC.)
Still cannot download or upload any torrent. Always get the information ¨"DNS connection error 10061 …". What is more, after the change, I cannot even login into your site with Mozilla any longer but only with IE (which I do not like).
I am using WIN XP Professional.
Can you, please, instruct me what I should/could do.

to fix your problems with Mozilla, please go to your settings of the browser and delete the cache and uncheck the automatic cache management. As well, please delete all offline data, which might be stored in the browser ( be sure to keep your saved passwords ).
Afterwards you might close the browser and open it again and your browser problems should be fixed.If you still experience problems with your browser, please deactivate all firewalls and other security or virus programs and then try again.
If your problem is solved after this procedure, please report again here, which firewalls and security programs you have, for that we could guide you to some solutions.Should you still have problems after all with Mozilla, even that you made the above changes, please report them and report your router or wlan connection as well, please. Because you are able to visit this site with IE shows that the problem might either be in the settings from your browser, or in the settings from your router or wlan - connection. Your DNS - problem should be fixed by now, after you edited the hosts-file.
To complete the support from Uwe earlier in this thread, here is the original hosts - file for Windows PCs:

The problem with Mozilla was easily solved.
Unfortunately, the DNS problem is still here: cannot download/upload anything, despite the edited hosts-file.Any other suggestion – or should I just leave it at that for a while?

SOLVED!!!
After many (far too many) hours spent by searching for all sorts of possible solutions for my trouble with your (only your) website, it suddenly dawned on me that perhaps you, after all, offered the right solution but not the right way to get there. Namely, the suggested path through "Accessories" and "Notepad" didn't work at all. Not for me.
So I took the "classical" route:
My Computer > C:\ > WINDOWS > system 32 > drivers > etc
And – surprise, surprise! – there was yet another "hosts" file (apart from the one that I had created/modified under your instruction). It had only two entries referring to your website (not five as in the other "hosts" file).
I opened the file with Notepad, deleted both "wrong" entries, saved the file, rebooted the computer — and, here we are: IT WORKS AGAIN!
I described my "inventive" procedure in order to help some other miserable soul like me who would not be successful by strictly following your instructions.
Thanks for all your help and patience. I am almost happy now.

I had about a dozen torrents seeding, and then over the last day every one eventually stopped seeding and showed ""No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it" as tracker status in my client (uTorrent 3.2.3 under Windows XP). I read this, and many other, help threads, checked my hosts file (everything was fine), looked into resetting my passkey, etc., etc., etc.
Then, I decided to just close my uTorrent client and then restart it. Now everything is fine. So, if you have this problem, try the simple stuff first. I need to remember that myself…

I read this morning that there were issues with our tracker …, I guess your problems were related to that and had nothing to do with your settings or the restart of your torrent client programme.
