      @RaveRocks:

This will not be the first disgruntled member I've witnessed.  I won't call it a 'gay thing' because I've seen the same emotional outburst on non-sexual and str8 porn sites as well.  There's a bit of Bette Davis in all of us.  I speak from personal experience.

Well, then it should be required that, before they leave, they utter the phrase, "What a dump!"    :cheesy2:

          @twinkletoes:

This thread illustrates my reasons for suggesting that the torrent "Comments" section should be removed

Don't want to sound rude, but following many of your posts - you would just remove everything from this site except the Download button.

I am sure that you don't want to sound rude, but you are.
I am a great supporter of showing appreciation for an uploader's effort by using the
"Say Thank You! and give Uploader XX Seedbonus Points" option

It is simple to use and many downloaders on this site do invoke it, unlike the "Comments" and "Rating" options.
As such, I believe it gives a far better indication of the value of an upload.
Whereas, in my experience, much of the "Comments" and "Rating" is snarky, serving only to antagonize uploaders.

May I remind you that you made a similar observation: "the site has a 5 star torrent rating system.
Though we have to face facts - it is dead, no-one, or very few and very seldom, rates torrents
and no-one takes into account that rating when choosing a torrent to download."

Some uploaders have to be antagonized! Like the guys uploading files knowing very well that they are corrupted! This is not acceptable IMHO.
They are dumping unusable files on everybody just to improve their ratios. Now that we are all anonymous it's not possible anymore to single them out and avoid them.
Where else, if not in the comment section, can you voice your frustration?

Wanna try an experiment? I have a corrupted file of a video everybody wants to see. I bet it will be downloaded like crazy. And then it's only a matter of time until the comment section fills up and the rating goes to zero. Ah well, I don't want to antagonize innocent downloaders…  😉

First of all, my response was not intended as an attack on you personally.
Actually, it was prompted by some belligerent comments which I received in response to a few of my uploads.

Corrupt files and other objective problems with an upload should be reported directly to moderators, in my opinion.
              Just use the option
"Report Torrent Click here to report this torrent to staff for violation of the rules"

My problem lies with the subjective comments.
As you said earlier "Most people are too lazy to comment anyway."
That makes the "Comments" highly skewed

                twinkletoes,

don't worry, I didn't feel attacked at all.
Sometimes I believe not everything can be handled by moderators. They didn't download the files themselves, so they don't know any better.
I think in cases like this, corrupted files, downloaders can deal with it themselves by commenting and warning others. Maybe it's also a good teaching lesson for everybody to actually read comments before they click on the download button. If others had a bad experience there is no reason to have it yourself.
I am sorry to hear that you had experienced belligerent comments. Strange. I rarely come across any of these. See my examples above. These uploads just keep on giving. In a good way.
Sure, Daddy Mugs or Jake Cruise always invite some snarking, but so what? Don't take it personally. Of course comments are always subjective and you might not like what you are going to read.
But now that you are anonymous anyway, why do you care? Nobody (except moderators) knows that twinkeltoes is responsible for the upload. If you want the name recognition then you always can add "uploaded by twinkletoes". Just kidding.

Thanking an uploader by giving points and using the Thank You button DO NOT indicate if the file is good or not, just that people thanked the uploader for posting the file.  99.99999999999% of all that takes place the second they decide to download the file.

The star rating and, mainly, the comment section are used once the person has looked at the file.

That is what I have seen over the last 4 years on the job here and many more years on other torrent sites.

Torrents with corrupted files need to be reported.

Staff will try the most possible to verify if the report is founded or not.
If yes, the file will be removed from the public list. This avoids more members to download these bad files.

Just a plea, before reporting, try to be sure as much as possible it is not due to the software / hardware you use to playback (codecs installed, hardware DVD player don't play HD codecs or HD resolution, etc…)

I learned THAT the hard way.  I thanked someone and awarded SBP for a torrent that looked like it would interest me.  (I actually commented on it in the "monitoring bad uploaders" thread).  After three whole days, nobody (according to my torrent client) had more than 17% of a 1 GB file.  Coincidentally, I searched the site and found the same movie, but at a size of over 2 GB with 2 seeds.  I killed the earlier download and I took a chance on the newly found torrent and had the entire movie in mere hours.  Due to that happenstance, I've decided to reserve awarding points until I see how quickly traffic is moving and see that it won't take me an entire week to download a 1 GB file.

The observation was made for the rating system, not for the comments. And the quote you offered is cut out of context. The whole idea was to reform it for more useful purposes, not to dispose of it. Because I believe improving doesn't always mean removing.

Here is one example from 2 years ago but still visible, before I started posting anonymously
(and before seedbonus points were offered)
                            http://tracker.gaytor.rent/details.php?id=44822

Here is a more recent example
                            http://tracker.gaytor.rent/details.php?id=92926

The "Rating" is "3.3 out of 5 with 3 vote(s) total"
3 votes!  Is that a representative sample?
The 5 "Comments" are mostly negative.
But 35 people chose to thank me and gave me 207 seedbonus points.
I'd like to direct raphjd's attention to the comment from almaral:
"After watching the movie I decided to give more seeds bonus."

                            @ballard1:

I upload almost exclusively in the Themed Movie category.
Far fewer comments are posted there than in the porn categories.
I put a great deal of effort into my uploads.
So, I am concerned that some jerk with an ax to grind will post one nasty comment,
which will stop many people from giving the movie a chance and all my effort is for nought.

So you're the guy who offers all these great movies? Cool!
I actually thought that the comments were not that bad! Pretty civil.
Don't forget that people have opinions and many others have another one. Some may hate the movie because there is no gay action, others might like it anyway.
Don't take all of this too serious. I personally am not deterred from downloading something just because somebody else said that he didn't like it. There was that movie the other day with Tori Spelling and everybody bitched about it. So what? I downloaded it and thought that it wasn't that bad after all.

And the ratings don't count anyway. Too many ratings are based on personal preferences which might not be mine.

If I have learned one thing here: if you get a bitchy comment, don't respond! Your response and justification is an invitation for more confrontation. Just let it go. Just answer if you like where the conversation is going. If not: write a response to get it off your chest but DO NOT press the send button! Its a no win situation.

The fact that someone came back after watching the video and gave you more SB, is an extremely rare thing.

I'm willing to bet that 34, probably all 35, of those thank you's came at the same time they started downloading, not after watching the videos.  And with the exception of Almaral's 2nd set of SB, I'm willing to bet that all the SB you got was at the time of download, not after watching the video.
