Ratio Confusion: Please explain….

I am very confused about how ratios work. 1) Why is it that when I've uploaded a file, the uTorrent shows the ratio to be .544?
2) How is it that in the course of an hour when I've uploaded a file and downloaded two "freeleech" files, my overall ratio actually goes down.

I confess outright I do not understand these things, so if anyone would be so kind to explain, I would really appreciate it. And remember, I have confessed I know nothing about this, so please be kind in your response  :laugh:

Sadly, due to the size of our site, ratios don't sync instantly, even when the site is working fully.    When the site gets overloaded, it takes even longer to sync.

Free Leech isn't always "free".   They have a set time that they are "free" and when that runs out, you get charged, if you are still downloading.  You only get charged for the part you download after Free Leech ends.   You will always get credited for your uploading.

Thanks for the reply. I understand about freeleeches, so only download those that have lots of time left.

i used to use Vuze, and my uploads would stop seeding as soon as they had been leeched. Following a moderator's advice, I've switched to uTorrent, and it's better now, but when I upload a file, the upload speed is really good, but as soon as one leecher grabs it, my uploading slows way down or stops altogether. This morning I uploaded an 807mb file, it has been grabbed 71 times, and yet uTorrent says I've uploaded only 207mb and my ratio for that file is .257. It is really frustrating. In the past few days I've uploaded a number of files, downloaded not much, and my overally ratio is the same. I don't know how to fix this, and it is a bit unmotivating   Any help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like it's catching up.  Right now it shows you with a ratio of 1.008.
