In a rambling, conspiratorial letter addressed to the FBI, alleged assassin Vance Boelter claimed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz instructed him to kill U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar so that Walz could run for the U.S. Senate, according to two people familiar with the contents of the letter.
The letter is the clearest evidence yet of Boelterās mindset after the targeted violence against Minnesota politicians last week. It is incoherent, one and a half pages long, confusing and hard to read, according to two people familiar with the letterās contents. It includes Boelter alleging he had been trained by the U.S. military off the books, and that Walz, who is not running for Senate, had asked him to kill Klobuchar and others.
Federal prosecutors allege the letter was left behind in a Buick that Boelter deserted near his home in Green Isle, Minn. It also allegedly contained Boelterās confession that he carried out the shootings that killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and injured Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

I am the shooter at large in Minnesota involved in the June 12 shootings, which happened in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 13 ā sometime between approximately 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. I will probably be dead by the time you read this letter. I wanted to share some information with you that you might find interesting.
āI was told by U.S. military people on the lakes during my release. Iāve been on many operations since then in Eastern Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa ā all in the line of duty, doing what I believed was right and in the best interest of the United States. Recently, I was approached about a project that Tim Walz wanted done. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Keith were involved. I wasnāt originally aware of the project ā but Tim wanted me to kill Amy Klobuchar and Tina Keith to force a planned retirement. Tim wants to be a senator and didnāt trust them to retire as planned,ā the letter added.
