      @raphjd said in Colorado Springs Gay Nightclub Shooting:

      Turns out that the shooter is "non-binary" and uses they/them

      The shooter's attorney has said this, but was the shooter "non-binary" before the shooting? On hearing this, my first reaction was that he/they/it was rather stupidly thinking that if he declared himself to part of the/ LGBTQIA+ community, then he wouldn't get a hate crime escalation.

      This is faulty logic. A person can be charged with a bias-related/hate crime even if they are a member of the target community. Furthermore, nullifying a hate crime escalation wouldn't reduce his sentence: If convicted [only] on five counts of first-degree homicide with no escalation, the shooter will still get life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors might not even pursue the hate crime escalation in court as it adds a lot of work and delay, and won't change the ultimate result.

        @eobox91103 So true! Whatever form, thing or gender, she / he / it / they (SHEIT) is still a killer. A 5x killer even. A killer is, yet still a killer. No amount of descriptive wordings ain't gonna change that.

          Did you read the link I posted?

          CBS said he changed his name just before turning 16 because he was being bullied online.

          Months earlier, when he was 15, a website with photos of Brink targeted him with ridicule, The Post reported. Additionally, a YouTube account was opened in his name that included an animation titled “Asian homosexual gets molested.”

          Also, the main reason I posted this was because liberal media immediately jumped to reporting this as a conservative, most likely MAGA, white man.

                @eobox91103

                Of course not.

                I bet if I only posted MSNBC, CNN, Slate, Salon and The Root you would though.

                  @raphjd Let us remember that this thread is not in the Politics and Debate section. Here, we talk about issues, not other people.

                        @ianfontinell I hope the response in Colorado Springs--and elsewhere in the US--is forward-looking: One of healing, inclusion, tuning-up of red-flag laws, etc. The focus should not be on the shooter. That creature is locked up and will stay way until the end of its life.
