Politically correct pronoun etiquette

I once had a roommate who did not like his real name which was "Matthew". He would get annoyed whenever I called him "Matthew". Almost everybody called him Matthew, although a few called him "Matty". I asked him "What DO you want me to call you?" and he surprised me... he said "Call me 'FAGGOT' !" I rarely did. But when I did, he was pleased to be called faggot, and he would often say something like, "I didn't hear you.. say it LOUDER!" He also would ask me to tie him up and rape him.. which is something I would never even consider doing. He might have said that knowing I would not do it.
Has anybody else heard of something like that? I've noticed that on this site and generally everywhere, the word "FAGGOT" is very rarely used, and when it is, it is not in a nice way.
What I have heard much more often are gay guys referring to other gay guys as "her" and "she".

Instead of saying all that... (by the way, it's spelled athEIst), why didn't you just describe yourself simply by saying you are an asshole?
